This Is Navalny - Benefit concert (NOW CANCELLED)

#1 Post by Suburban_Boy »

Pet Shop Boys will headline a very special event in Berlin on June 28, playing a 40-minute set.

The event, “This Is Navalny”, will also include performances by Russian musicians incl. the duo @aigelband, the singer @grechkalu and classical musicians, as well as a live meeting with Yulia Navalnaya(the widow of Alexei @navalny and head of the Anti-Corruption Foundation @acf.international which her husband founded), a screening of the Oscar-winning documentary film “Navalny” and a book signing.

The event, at the Uber Eats Music Hall in Berlin, commemorates Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who died in prison in Russia in 2024, and aims to bring supporters together in the fight for freedom in Russia. Profits from the event will help to support Russian political prisoners through the You Are Not Alone Foundation. All details and tickets for “This Is Navalny” can be found at the link in bio.

Pet Shop Boys said today: “We are very happy to give support to the alternative vision of a free and democratic Russia expressed by Alexei Navalny whose tremendous courage and spirit continue to inspire. Navalny imagined Russia, liberated from the corruption and authoritarianism of Putin, becoming a ‘prosperous, democratic country’ at peace with its neighbours. He considered Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to be ‘immoral, fratricidal and criminal’. His legacy is one of hope and optimism for change.”

Booked.

A 40-minute set---and the press release doesn't mention a "Dreamworld Set"----so we should hopefully get a PSB-curated Navalny set!

It would be great but I really doubt that. On June 28th they‘ve just started their Dreamworld summer tour coming from Spain. To rehearse a one off set in just one week would be a great effort.

They'll perform the Hymn, that's for sure. The rest is probably the same, an abbreviated version.

Which track inclusion would make this set special and in the spirit of the event??

They surely would play Hymn though otherwise whats the point?

A 40 minute curated set would perhaps be more likely then, but might include some appropriate tracks from Dreamworld to keep things "simpler". I imagine they don't want it to be a wholly somber affair either, but it needs to set the right tone.

Could have already happened and could have been prepared in advance so they are ready to go. It’s not that such an event is spontaneously planned or acts booked last minute.

It’s not announced as a special set but that they’ll headline „a very special event“.

The fact that there‘s just a 3 1/2 weeks presale phase shows that this event is kind of spontaneous or curated last minute.

If it would have been planned months in advance, Stuart Price must have done completely new live arrangements of songs that fits the evening‘s main topic. I really doubt it.

Wish I could go. It's brave of them; I leave it at that.

They are professional musicians who can put together a 40-minute live set at short notice. Stuart's involvement is not essential.

This Is Navalny - Benefit concert

Potentially unlikely, but it would be amazing if this was a bespoke concert - maybe it could even give rise to something they could tour more widely. Potential song choices:

Hymn (in memoriam Alexei Navalny)
West End girls
Integral
My October symphony
Happiness is an option
Silver age
Twentieth century
No time for tears
Living in the past
Up against it
The dead can dance
Bolshy
Hell
Skeletons in the closet
Kaputnik
Dancing star
A red letter day
Go West
