Track 46 : This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave
Behaviour Further Listening Disc 1 - Track 2
Warning - controversial post
"This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave" is not a song that I like or listen to.
I have never felt that the music and lyrical subject matter matched. But, all opinions are valid - if not agreeable to all!

My favourite Pets Shop Boys song. Played this in the morning before my last day at secondary school in 1991. I find it haunting and love the arrangement. The version that opened 'Performance' was stunning too, as are both the extended mixes (yes, there are two!).

Re: Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless
A stonking composition full of rampant, hazy, gothic sadness. An emotional wallop that opens doors that should remain firmly closed. Anyone who has ever fled a dismal small town, a joyless home, a harrowing school experience, or a toxic workplace (and who now shudders at the thought of finding themselves in a similarly hostile environment) will resonate with This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave.
Being Boring followed by This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave. Quite the statement of intent!

To me the words and music combine to create a perfect mood of dread.
I only wish I hadn’t learned that Sunblest is a brand of white bread; I always imagined it as something more mysterious!

This must be the place... My favourite track on Behaviour and the extended mix is an essential listening.

I was already familiar with the brand of bread from my 1970s childhood, but for ages I thought “surely he can’t mean that?” so assumed it was some kind of Catholic religious thing!
Love Pet Shop Boys? You'd probably enjoy TIERGARTEN: https://linktr.ee/tiergartenmusic

I assumed the same. Always though he was singing "sun blessed" and it was some religious thing!TallThinMan wrote: ↑Thu 05 Sep 2024, 6:35 pmI was already familiar with the brand of bread from my 1970s childhood, but for ages I thought “surely he can’t mean that?” so assumed it was some kind of Catholic religious thing!

I'm not going to attempt to put my thoughts about this track into words, as there's nothing I could conjure up to beat that. Behaviour Further Listening Disc 1 - Track 1
It's 1990 and the fourth studio album lands. "Behaviour." or "Behavior." depending on where you are in the world. Is this the only PSB album with two different spelt titles for the same content?
The second single from the album opens Side A - so good, it is the only encore ending song that suits the Dreamworld Tour. Beautiful.
I suspect Hartley Hare scarred you psychologically too. He bloody terrified me.
Re: Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless
This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave is my favourite PSB song. Since 1990!
You can imagine my excitement when I was attending thier Performance Tour in Milan, and they opened the show just with this song.

Re: Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless
So I believe This must be the place I waited years to leave was originally a backing track for a song they were working on for the James Bond The Living Daylights film back in 1987x though they re-produced it again with a new melody which became TMBTP.
Please, Actually, Introspective, Behaviour, Very, Bilingual, Nightlife, Release, Fundamental, Yes, Elysium, Electric, Super.

As a teenager, This Must Be... was my least favourite track on Behaviour, it's now one of my favourites.
Julian Mendelsohn's 7 minute extended mix is majestic (seek it out if you haven't heard it). How this version somehow didn't make it to the further listening disc is a glaring oversight !
