In your latest episode, you guys mentioned a promo cassette of 'Actually' that featured a 1 minute instrumental extract/reprise of the 'What Have I Done To Deserve This?' 12" mix and the end of side A. Are there any links/pics of this online anywhere (Discogs or similar)? I've not been able to find it after a bit t of Googling.

Interesting. Has a rip ever surfaced of the reprise? Be interesting to hear which minute they used and how it was edited!

It’s the extended mix - faded in at about 34s and faded out around a minute later.

Your wish is my command. Correction: three sliders, five presets. And it even has a tape still inside it - Bentley Rhythm Ace! (I wondered where that had got to!) Doesn't appear to be working right now but might be my dodgy batteries.

This bad boy played a lot of PWEI and Prodge and Orb and co in its time. Now I want to get it going again!
OMG, I had that one too. I also had a couple of other AIWA walkmans before that, one of which had a radio player you inserted in the tape deck (I am not imagining this!)

I remember first listening to Please, Disco and Actually on them as I became a proper Pethead around the time of Heart. The auto reverse was great as it saved you having to rewind/fast forward when a side ended.

Probably only stopped listening to cassettes around the time of Bilingual, as I was a late adopter of CDs. The great thing about tapes was that you really got to hear the whole album (no skipping!) so a relief that I was onto CDs by Nightlife.

Episode 24 - Love

Whether it’s a catastrophe or a bourgeois construct, Pet Shop Boys have much to say on love. And so do we - first putting our own love for the band under the microscope to try and uncover where love becomes obsession. Then comes the lyrical deep-dive, unpicking all the ways Neil “Man of Mystery” Tennant crafts a love song, before Chris “Intense Urges” Lowe derails things and we all need to go for a cold shower.

Plus: there’s a high-stakes middle bit where two straight middle-aged men talk about sexuality, and a more familiar climax where they compile the ultimate Pet Shop Boys love album: Slush.

If you’re enjoying the podcast this season, we’d love it if you could take a moment to leave a review, on whichever podcast platform you listen from. Please choose your favourite episode from the series and head on over and scribble a few lines. We’ve only had a small number so far this season and it might help positively influence algorithms, or something - who knows? If you’ve never left a podcast review before please make us your first! It would mean a lot

Comment left on the current episode. Which, by the way, was very well done. I think that's a very difficult subject to navigate as a straight PSB fan. It shouldn't have to be though - I think a lot of what you said about your experiences reflect mine when I was at school and had PSB photos and lyrics all over my workbooks and folders - the casual homophobic comments at a time when the hair metal look was considered the height of heterosexuality😂. I was just in it for the music, and the music was gooooooood!

New Episode: Episode 25 - Discography (pt1)

For our 25th episode, we celebrate the blue vinyl reissue of double album Discography by going “Double In Depth” to trade some of our most obscure facts yet.

From the first record alone, we unearth early draft lyrics, an old BBC Two documentary, an Elvis TV special, the 1988 UK singles chart, and Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - while also examining the roles of both the saxophone and Pink Floyd in the Pet Shop Boys canon.

But who knew Enya was stalking Neil and Chris’s every move? More next week!
