Will the psb be retiring?

#1 Post by Swampy »

I hate to say it but it seems they're youth has run out. Their last album was a sign of their demise with doomed to hell songs like Burning The Heather and Will-O-The Wisp. Perhaps they will be forgotten in the back passages of time. I suppose their time is over and they can no longer get satisfaction from being the higher positions of the Nightclubs and such. Time has run them down, as it does all of us.... but I'm not there yet. I'm in a different situation. Time has spoken to me. I have just stopped playing videogames. So what has been the psb's legacy? Discuss.

They've been doing songs about getting old for 20 years now at least. The two songs that you mentioned are two of their best recent tracks (imo).

Imagine thinking "youth" is the only stage of life that matters.

They won’t tour forever … get out and enjoy them. I can’t see them stopping writing/making/recording music ever. Not while both of them are able to. Why should they? Why would they? They’ll do what they want to do in their later years… and who would predict that won’t include them making music… of course they will.

They’re [sic] youth has run out? I should think it has - Chris is 63 and Neil is 68!

Yes they will retire someday. Absolutely.

Or they could surprise us and discover the Ark of the Covenant. I mean, they were quiet during covid, so maybe they were out there doing some archaeology.

They've got plenty of life left in them. They've hardly even peaked yet as far as I'm concerned.
They've been very productive, the pets are virile as ever.
Even if you don't like the latest album, look back at Elysium, Bilingual or Nightlife. They bounced back from
those times. (One could argue they never had a dull moment, but that's debatable)
So I'd say they can and will hit another high.
Neil can still sing and write. Chris is full of energy and ideas, can obviously still perform also.
I can't see any reason to suggest for them to slow down or God forbid consider retiring.
We still have new fans discovering PSB. They shouldn't be robbed from experiencing a new album while they're going
through life and their own journey. For many of us, it's a unique experience to actually be a fan whilst there's an album release and sequential tour. I haven't even seen them live yet!

Many artists continue to perform well into their senior years. 90's even.

Besides, why would you want them to retire?
It's a bit of an offensive suggestion to make on the most prolific PSB fan forum.
Have you seen the Dreamworld tour? It's so invigorating, and it shows what PSB stands for.
It'd be a massive shame not to continue creating a legacy for years to come.
I can see them being around for at least another decade minimum.
There's still so much unchartered territory they haven't covered musically.
Plus there are always new pop music sounds and trends for them to venture into.
I mean during the last couple of years they've written 30+ songs that haven't been allocated to a project
that we're aware of just yet. They're overflowing with creativity and passion for artistry.
Neil looks a bit wrinkled, but that's about it!

I'm hoping this thread is more of a piss take or tease, to encourage PSB management to want to prove us wrong.
It's been a while since they've announced the next big thing, but that doesn't mean they're phoning it in forever.
They've hinted at news being in the next Annually, so we just have to be patient. No need to be provocative.

Agreed. I've always been under the impression they'll keep making music as long as they're physically able to.

Why is this question on here when it is so full of hatred from a troll. It has no place on this site and nor does swampy. Can this whole thread just be removed as I find it’s tone offensive. Obviously just a response to the release of living in the past.

I think Swampy isn't setting out to offend anyone, if you are offended then get off your pedestals and lighten up. He's created a good discussion by aiming straight for the jugular. Yes, they are "past their prime'' as it were and where normally we'd be seeing a new album by about now, instead we are seeing a steady stream of remix duties of the past 18 months. Remix duties for artists that earlier in their careers wouldn't have been seen in the same social circles as the boys (Weller, Noel etc). Neil and Chris know they are past their prime, Neil even sang about it in "Invisible" eleven years ago, but I don't think they honestly care. They are just too damn good to be doing those "heritage gigs" but not relevant enough for "ver yoof" to bother the "hit parade".

I think the gaps between albums will start to get longer now. It's already three years since Hotspot and nothing seems to even be on the horizon...

It’s only recently that Chris performed Paninaro live. This will give us at least 20 more years of PSB until he’ll be doing it one more/last time. So I’m chilled if it comes to the future of PSB.

I think they have a problem with getting old and the entire naturally fading rich life thing. But that's nature. If you don't succeed you don't succeed. Rich people are greedy.

Well Noel, Chris and Neil were all at the 10 Downing St reception with Tony Blair in 1997!

Yes, looking at the gaps between studio albums, it seems Release (April 2002) to Fundamental (May 2006) and Super (April 2016) to Hotspot (January 2020) are currently the largest gaps. With the former, Disco 3 came out in February 2003, which is similar to a studio album. Inner Sanctum came out in April 2019, which is not. Is anyone realistically expecting an album this year?

Interesting that Erasure have now released 19 studio albums to PSB's 14, which may suggest their quality control is slightly less strict.
