The 10-track "US-version" of Introspective that could've been

#1 Post by telys »

Introspective was perhaps too different/difficult as a follow up to the hugely succesful Actually, at least in the US, if traditional PSB-lore is to be believed. A more straightforward 10-track album could've been the solution. So here is the 10-track, "US-version" of Introspective. Three tracks are decoupled to make them six. Left to my own devices has become two, with the House-intro as a standalone track. The Paris newsreel intro to INS is also a standalone track. Always on my mind/IMH is separated into two tracks. I get excited (12" version) is added. It's the one track from the era that fits the sound of Introspective and I believe it was recorded for the album. The long version of It's alright is substituted for the 10"-version. The album version is way inferior to the later mixes and it doesn't sound very PSB/Trevor Horn.
This US-version is about 1 minute longer than the real version of the album. Tracklist adjusted to make to equally long LP-sides

The 1988 10-track version of Introspective
1. House (the intro to Left to my own devices)
2. Left to my own devices
3. Domino Dancing
4. Always on my mind
5. In my house (w. Always on my mind outro)

6. Paris 1968 (intro to INS)
7. I'm not scared
8. I get excited
9. I want a dog
10. It's alright (10" mix)

Nice! I Get Excited is indeed a bop but Side Two is a little weak/light.

And can't we find room for So Sorry, I Said or Losing My Mind (maybe one cover too many, admittedly)?

I find side two strong as hell.
LMM was the lead single from Results and a top ten hit. The LM version doesn't differ much from the PSB version apart from Neil's voice. So Sorry I Said doesn't fit the mood/sound of Introspective.
This version is still a bit arty and conceptual with shorter tracks (Depeche Mode used to do that) and segueing.

BTW has anyone found a version of "Le chant du départ" that matches the intro?

The version they use is somewhat more melodic than what is common

Could be a speed-up sample from this maybe?

Has everyone forgotten about the brilliant 'Bounce'? Great piece of deep house and very of it's time....

Yeah I thought Bounce was an contender that got dropped? IGEYGET yep. Shame they didn’t do “Baby, let’s play house” in full. Then there’s Don Juan. The b-side version probably fits better but how I love the demo version.

Just had another listen to Bounce. No way it would've fit onto Introspective. I guess one could put Don Juan (the longer mix) on the album and omit Always on my mind but keep In My House. But then Always on my mind needs an album and that would've been the ICHH soundtrack.

Ah yes that's more like it. More upbeat than the other versions I've heard.

Bounce is a very airy and positive track. Would of fitted on many albums as pleasant filler, imo, especially with actual production. But they're not heavy on positivity :)

What do you mean by "Intro to LTMD" followed by "Devices" itself? Then we could just as well keep the long album version as it is! The same with "Always on my mind/In my house" - it's already on the album.

I think the idea of a 10 track Introspective is an interesting one but could more easily imagine something like this:

1. Left to my own devices
2. Domino dancing
3. Losing my mind
4. Bounce
5. I get excited (you get excited too)
6. I’m not scared
7. Always on my mind
8. I want a dog
9. Don Juan
10. It’s alright
Woof.

I'm not a revisionist, but that's such a cool album. (not sure Domino Dancing and Left belong next to each other though, but minor point).

Also Don Juan disco mix is a bit of an oddity it terms of vibe. You could sink an entire album with that gloom  But maybe the demo mix would be more complementary? It plays well with others. I like the urgency of the demo version, but would need to be polished.

And let's not forget the part in the demo mix when Neil goes wonky with the extended "take it or leave it". Quite a funny gem!
