Poll ends soon on ranking the first five PSB studio albums

#1 Post by geowayne » Fri 23 Nov 2018, 5:33 am

Hey there! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which asks you to rank the Pet Shop Boys' first five studio albums -- what many music critics regard as their "classic" or "golden" era, from Please through Very -- from #1 to #5, with #1 being the one that you think is the best and #5 being the "weakest" of the batch (although I think most of us would agree that none of them is actually a "weak" album). If you haven't voted yet, please take a few moments to visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and make your choices right there on my home page.

On Sunday I will end this poll, post the final results, and kick off a new survey for the week ahead.

Thanks to everyone who has already voted! And I hope you all have a terrific weekend!

Interesting poll. I’m sure Neil would approve that petheads agree that Behaviour is ‘officially their best album’

Thing is.... as is all to often the case. Neil’s wrong

Please is by far the best album they’ve ever produced, followed by Actually

If they had stopped after these two albums their place in pop history would have been assured even them

If their only output was Behaviour, we’d not be discussing this now

Behaviour is their 5th best album.

When you look at those first 5 records it's hard to think of another band who have had such a consistent early output. Five incredibly strong albums and each with a distinct feel. And it's not as of they played safe on them. Introspective and Behaviour in particular were creatively quite risky for them.

For me they rank as follows:

1. Behaviour
2. Very
3. Actually
4. Introspective
5. Please
I'm always waiting...

Introspective that low?!

Opinions are great aren’t they - each to their own. I disagree with this.
I’d have:

1. Behaviour
2. Introspective
3. Very
4. Actually
5. Please
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

Please seems to have ended up the whipping boy in this poll. Personally these days I find it almost too close to call between Please, Actually and Behaviour as their greatest album, though I always vote for Behaviour out of long-standing habit.

Behaviour only wins because Neil says it’s gheir greatest album

If Neil said bilingual was now their best album most on here would suddenly change their minds to agree with Neil

A side effect of fandom

Not sure how much impact that has. Don't think Neil has massively pushed this view so don't think it has this kind of influence.

For the record, I do think it's their best album regardless!
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional
