I think it's far from trite considering its meaning and symbolism in relation to the AIDS crisis at the time. I know it's popular at sporting events, but for many listeners/fans, it's hard to remove the song from what it represented in the epidemic.
Sure, but that's still the context in which PSB presented it.

The song was written pre-AIDS crisis after all, so apart from some 70's LGBTQ utopianism, I still don't think the song in itself and isolation conveys anything of import.
Apart from the video (which is frankly good), the production (really clever), the choirs (impressive) and these stuff, Go West is musically addictive and a easy to remember, a very catchy song to sing along. It's the classic anthemic song geneal public love, talking about freemdom and frienship. Of course, it's specially understandable by the gay community but also by all kind of public. The song is not very far from other anthemic songs like Hey Jude from the Beatles, Imagine of John Lennon, MJ's Heal the World with people singing along for freedom, respect, peace and understanding. It even has its political aspect because of the perestroika in Russia.
I agree entirely and would add that Go West has a classic and curiously moving chord structure (based on Pachelbel's Canon) that suits the wistful nature of the lyrics perfectly; even the key change at the end (which can so oftyen be cheesy) works brilliantly.

I'm gonna go thematic here, as I'm listening to a lot of PSB instrumentals these days...

Side I
1. Axis
2. London (Thee Radical Blacklite Mix)
3. Leaving (PSB Freedom Mix)
4. A Red Letter Day (Trouser Enthusiasts Autoerotic Decapitation Mix)
5. So Hard (Dub Mix)
6. New York City Boy (Morales Dub)

Side 2
1. Winner (instrumental)
2. Shouting in the Evening (instrumental)
3. KDX 125
4. Left To My Own Devices (Frankie Knuckles Royal Piano Version)
5. Pandemonium (The Moon and the Stars Dub)
6. Was it Worth It? (Dub)
-----------------------------------------
I'm kind of shy and dry and verging on ugly.
