Least Embarrassing PSB Song

#1 Post by York Minster » Tue 31 Jul 2018, 4:28 am

Over yonder on another thread there is a great cry about New York city boy and Hold On being embarrassing.

But really, please allow me to try to explain...if you're around people who like harder music, or rap, etc, most PSB sounds very embarrassing. Left To My Own Devices is fab, but if I play it for a non-pop fan, it sounds a bit embarrassing.

So what songs are least embarrassing to play to a general audience who may not like pop or is more indie/metal/goth etc.

It's A Sin may make the list, despite being pop. It's very 80's but has plenty of bombast.

This Must Be The Place has some indie cred to it and is quite dark and atmospheric.

What else?
And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'
"He couldn't have fell off that hard" Ain't no way
"What happened to the way you was rappin' when you was scandalous
That Canibus turned into a television evangelist"
Plus he raps with his regular voice [BOOSH! BOOSH!]
[BOOSH! BOOSH!] (What was that?) Pet Shop Boys

That’s the thing about negative energy, about hatred. It can be positive. It throws into relief all the things you know you like. It tells you, by elimination, what you’re about. Sometimes you can only define yourself by what you hate. Hatred becomes an inspiration; it makes you think, “What I’m doing now I totally believe in, and I don’t care what other people say.” Guided by hatred, you don’t have to follow the herd. - Neil Tennant

West End Girls, Being Boring, This Must be the Place, Rent (maybe the spoken bit is slightly embarrassing?), Drunk, Nothing Has Been Proved.

I'm both an indie kid and a pop kid, and I think the Pet Shop Boys are pretty well respected by indie fans as far as pop acts go. I'm a member of a Mansun fan group on Facebook, and yesterday there was a thread about the first albums people bought. I mentioned that "Please" was mine and got lots of positive replies. I was definitely not the only PSB fan there!

Invisible (in a modern context)

It's a Sin (in a historic context)
I sincerely *love* Disco 2 and listen to it straight through regularly.

The way it used to be

It’s alright

The survivors

The theatre

Integral

Jealousy (extended version)

These were the 6 songs I sent to a “non-fan” friend who asked for a few PSB tracks to add to his playlist for him to listen to whilst on a long journey. (I later added “For your own good”, just because..!)
More strobes and BANGING, please!

Too many to mention. I can't pick a single song or a handful of songs. I'll just agree that most of the songs mentioned here so far are very not embarrassing.
This is a song about boys and girls. You hear it playing all over the world.

No....NO! Not "we all feel better...."! Chris was way too horny when he came up with "And now I'm really horny...."

Least embarassing....most of their songs but I'd go with: Fugitive. It's just damn cool.
"John 3:16."
