Pet Shop Boys, Similar

#1 Post by York Minster »

Not sure if this is on or off topic, but should work here anyway:

Lets share songs that sound like Pet Shop Boys songs. It could be a small part of the song, just the melody, or the song taken as a whole.

Here is Mood Ring by Debbie Harry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtnRMEdLhps (youtube audio sounds worse than usual lately IMO)

It's got J J Belle and produced by Anne Dudley. It sounds vaguely like something from maybe the Liza or Dusty album, or less so Behaviour, especially with the sax. Somewhat similar in sound to some of the mixes of Seriously. I like it. At 3:10 it's kind of like the 1999 Art Of Noise Debussy album (amazing album btw).
And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'
"He couldn't have fell off that hard" Ain't no way
"What happened to the way you was rappin' when you was scandalous
That Canibus turned into a television evangelist"
Plus he raps with his regular voice [BOOSH! BOOSH!]
[BOOSH! BOOSH!] (What was that?) Pet Shop Boys

I've Been Here Before (And Now She's Dead) by Jack & Vera Duckworth. Particularly the middle eight.

The ultimate song that people think is an actual PSB song has to be Real Life's "Send Me An Angel". When I saw that this song predates the '86 version of "West End Girls" (and of course the "Please" album) I figured maybe PSB was biting Real LIfe's style. But from a fan perspective, there are maybe some some musical elements, but that's about all. When I used a PSB song in a lesson (and it was "Legacy", but it was more about the lyrics then the song which fans love oh so much) a student said she had a few PSB song on her Ipod....later she came up to me and said the one she couldn't think of was 'Send Me An Angel"). I told her it was Real Life and that people believe it is PSB all the time...and I sort of winched since I realized she must have gotten it from some Kaaza like site since it was obviously mismarked!

Can you give us some more info on what your lesson was and how Legacy came into play?

I have never thought Send Me An Angel sounds very PSB. I associate it more with early 80s synthpop than PSB synth/disco/dance. I can though understand why a mix of Bizarre Love Triangle was long ago labeled "Pet Shop Boys" mix.

Sparks - When Do I Get to Sing My Way?

However Sparks made great songs and I'm sure any similarities are pure coincidence.

The "PSB = Send Me An Angel" thing has been going around for YEARS. I guess back in 2000 or so, some flunky mislabeled an MP3 and shared it over Napster, and ever since then people have got the idea that it's a rare early PSB track (how short memories are: "Send Me An Angel" has been a hit three times, never mind the fact that the singer doesn't sound like Neil and the lyrics are nothing like anything he'd write).

True. Same Napster thing happened for One Night In Bangkok (1985) by Murray Head

History by Groove Armada has elements of PSB in it I feel and it's a bloody good track in it's own right :-)

One Night In Bangkok at least had the rap/sing thing that West End Girls had. Also, it's a fantastic track.

Did Sparks album come out before or after Very and when did they record? I really wonder if there wasn't some influence.

Just listened to the Bloc Party song. I don't really hear it. It's got a pulsating synth like a faster version of Drunk or Flamboyant maybe, but otherwise it's way too emo postpunk/pop or whatever genre Bloc Party are. I borrowed a disc of theirs from my library once and it was ok, but I have trouble with those vocals.

The pulsating synth was too small?
