Given Neil's mentioned a couple of times in recent interviews, etc., that there's renewed interest (primarily from their American label) in them putting out a follow up to Alternative, I thought I'd dust off the tracklisting for us to argue over.

I've used the 15 tracks per disc format as per the original Alternative album.

Alternative 2

CD1

01 The truck driver and his mate
02 Hit and miss
03 In the night 1995
04 Betrayed
05 How I learned to hate rock 'n' roll
06 Discoteca (new version)
07 The calm before the storm
08 Confidential (1992 demo for Tina Turner)
09 The boy who couldn't keep his clothes on
10 Delusions of grandeur
11 The view from your balcony
12 Disco potential
13 Silver age
14 Screaming
15 Je t'aime... moi non plus

CD 2

01 The ghost of myself
02 Casting a shadow
03 Lies
04 Sail away
05 Sexy Northerner
06 Always
07 Break 4 Love (UK radio mix)
08 Nightlife
09 Searching for the face of Jesus
10 Between two islands
11 Friendly fire
12 Positive role model
13 We're the Pet Shop Boys
14 Transparent
15 I didn't get where I am today

CD 3

01 The resurrectionist
02 Girls don't cry
03 In private (7 inch mix)
04 Blue on blue
05 No time for tears (7 inch mix)
06 Party song
07 Bright young things
08 Gin and Jag
09 We're all criminals now
10 After the event
11 The former enfant terrible
12 Up and down
13 Fugitive (7 inch mix)
14 My girl
15 Viva La Vida / Domino dancing

Three discs? Don't think that's a good idea.

I'd love to see 3 discs but I'd be very surprised if it came out as such. I'm thinking they would leave off the b-sides from Yes, but that still wouldn't cut it down to 2.

I would imagine that the following tracks *wouldn't* be on the compilation:

In the night 1995 -- just a straight-up remix (I know, they put the Hacienda version of "Violence" on Alternative, but I always thought that wasn't quite right)
Discoteca (new version) -- as above
Confidential (1992 demo for Tina Turner) -- demo, not a real b-side
Break 4 Love (UK radio mix) -- More of a Peter Rauhofer track, was issued in the USA on Star 69 records

...but the bigger challenge would be the licensing issues, since they've been on so many different labels in the US. It took, what, 3 years for PopArt to get issued there? And still no USA DVD of it AFAIK.

I would imagine anyone that wanted two discs of Pet Shop Boys b-sides would like three discs-worth even more. After all, what would you leave out?

I've just used the same criteria that Neil and Chris used for compiling Alternative. In the night 1995 isn't a remix, it's a complete rerecording, as is Discoteca. Confidential is only a demo in the same way that PSB's version of Losing my mind was on Alternative. Break 4 love was very much a PSB release, and a b-side to Home and dry.

Tracks like Nightlife were not B-sides

Actually it would... I just checked. Everything on that list up to "Lies" is 78:08. That cuts it close, but it's doable assuming no enhanced content or silly ineffective copy protection schemes. From "Sail Away" to "Bright Young Things" is approx 75 minutes (not sure exactly; I don't yet have the UK edit of "Break 4 Love" in my iTunes library).

This is also assuming they don't drop any of those tracks, and don't surprise us with previously-unreleased extended versions like "The Sound of the Atom Splitting".

For the US market Break for love would be on it. Nightlife is a b-side but than again we could all see that differently. I don't see a 3 disc set happen and since it would be too difficult to cut it down to 2 it won't happen at all. :shifty:

Break 4 Love is a collaboration of sorts. The artist name credited for the song is "Peter Rauhofer + Pet Shop Boys = The Collaboration". Just as "Absolutely Fabulous" is the artist name responsible for the song "Absolutely Fabulous".

It's also worth noting that Chris wasn't involved in B4L whatsoever. So to call it a true PSB track worthy of inclusion on ALTERNATIVE 2 is stretching it a bit far, in my opinion.

What about "Falling" and "So sorry I said"? I thought none of them was a b-side, but they are all on Further Listening discs.

I'd love an Alternative 2, but unfortunately there are too many b-sides now to make a double-disc compilation, and it would be a pity if they just choose the "best" one and leave out the rest...

Technically, all the tracks that appear on the CD singles for releases without a 7" arent b-sides.

Why not a 3-disc set?
This will be targeted to a "select audience" anyway....
