Re: Anti Social Social Club
Not to mention the talk shows, the radio 1 appearances, the endless documentaries…. exposure has always been the motivator.
I sincerely *love* Disco 2 and listen to it straight through regularly.
Re: Anti Social Social Club
The concept of "selling out" appears to be a relative term dependent on the start point of the person(s) you're talking about.
One here suggested PSB sold out when they moved to Parlophone. Another suggesting when they made a movie. Name your "selling out" point.
Ultimately no matter WHO you are as an artist it's about shifting your product. How you decide that goes is up to the individual. If taping at home and selling your music from the back of a van is it, great. If mass pressings of CDs in giant corporate record stores, go for it! If online only is your mantra, do you become a sell out if you decide one day to release something physically?

I agree, kinda. The PSB never had aspirations, as best I can tell, of not being as commercial as possible. For a brief moment in 1984 they were “underground” but I don’t think it was ever their desire to remain there.

That's a straw man argument. This is about this particular instance of their giving up any sense of distinctive style in return for cold hard cash.Gabby wrote: Fri 13 Dec 2024, 11:01 pm The concept of "selling out" appears to be a relative term dependent on the start point of the person(s) you're talking about.

It was never their aim to make cash and get exposure and fame at any cost. They were openly opposed to that sort of thing.ChoonHound wrote: Fri 13 Dec 2024, 11:04 pm I agree, kinda. It’s a collaboration. You’re not compelled to like it. It may well not be for you.richwill wrote:That's a straw man argument. I can see both sides here. However, I will say this is the band that lost a small fortune (allegedly) because they refused to have the Performance Tour sponsored by Pepsi and funded a lot of it themselves.. At the time I admired their stance, but now I'm thinking why on earth would you turn down that kind of financial backing..??
There is beauty in ugliness and ugliness in beauty.

No, it’s about collaborating. You don’t have to like the result, but they obviously liked the idea of seeing what PSB in ASSC’s world would look like. That isn’t selling out, grow up.richwill wrote: Sat 14 Dec 2024, 8:23 amThis is about this particular instance of their giving up any sense of distinctive style in return for cold hard cash.

They were young and dumb and flush with cash for the first time in their lives. They were also ignorant of the logistics of touring; the book Literally gets into how they didn’t understand tour sponsorship in the first place.

Because you want it to be about your art and not about a sugary soft drink that rots your teeth.y3potential wrote: Sat 14 Dec 2024, 9:24 am I can see both sides here. Is there such a thing?richwill wrote: Sat 14 Dec 2024, 5:33 pmAre some of the people here also regular contributors to Pepsi forums?
I don’t actually like the brands PSB has collaborated with, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that they’re working with companies within their wheelhouse of fashion and design. This sort of false comparison just reads as an admission that you’ve lost the argument.Do youse also have other favourite brands, like, I dunno, Zanussi or Andrex?
