Have you got a collector stopper point? Have you thought about it?

#1 Post by lalolalo »

What I mean is, is there any item you consider to be the final stop to your collecting days? Or, have you ever thought of stopping at some point?
For example, these days I'm saying that when I finally get the truck driver promo vinyl I'll stop collecting, as that is my most desired item in the whole collection.

But, looking back, I wonder if I'm just saying that and not meaning it at all, since I've done this already a couple times.
I thought I'd stop when I turned 50, but then that happened and I'm still here waiting for my nonetheless expanded releases.
And I remember telling a close friend that once the final single from hotspot arrived, that was it (He laughed at me).
But now I find myself having 17 versions of Nonetheless, again, before getting the expanded ones, and can't help craving for that single cd us version that's missing.

So, would that ever happen? Have you thought of it?

Greetings,

I'm generally after the new music, moreso than obsessively collecting all formats. Don't get me wrong, I still want a physical release of their music - not just a bunch of digital files - and if there's multiple formats of new singles, I'll probably get them all... but there's a point at which I know I need to let certain releases pass me by.

In keeping with that approach, with Nonetheless, I got the initial 2LP pressing, the initial 2CD pressing, and the Expanded CD version, and I've got all the CD singles along the way (still waiting for New / Dudes set to be dispatched in Australia). That'll do me.

Retro. :)

I stopped when the “Yes” box set appeared

Up until then I had every UK release and promo 12” plus some of the obscure US promos, US releases and other countries releases

I sold my Truck Driver 12” and Sexy Northerner 12” to fund a purchase for my then wife’s car!!

I then sold my collection bit by bit to fund my divorce.

I rarely buy any physical product now.
I’m a streamer and I’m content with that

I know my collection went to good homes

I stopped being a completist when the Vinyl Factory releases started coming out simply for financial reasons (he types whilst looking at 4 vinyl, 2 CD & 1 cassette versions of Nonetheless with the triple vinyl expanded version due for delivery tomorrow). I still buy every standard physical release and promo's if they have something interesting (exclusive artwork/track etc). The one exception to that is Smash.

I'll stop when they stop... but then Parlophone will likely continue to pillage my bank account I'm sure

I'll stop when they stop. But I do draw a line - looking at you, tea set, wrapping paper, and hoodies!

I kind of stopped getting "everything I didn't have" in the mid 2000s. I still buy a physical copy of the new albums on CD though.

The release of extra/different pressings of albums (like the recent Nonetheless) that at the end of the day are cash grabs, kind of cheapen the PSB brand, so I'm disinclined to buy what I don't need to.

In the days of only being able to buy things in real shops I used to buy pretty much everything I could find, although I was not a total completist.

Nowadays I still buy everything I can find on CD and the occasional bit of vinyl. I bought Nonetheless on CD and zoetrope vinyl then bought (but was annoyed by) the new double CD release.

I'm actually at the point of if it weren't for the fact I have bought at least one version of every album and single from the start right up until now I'd stop buying altogether. PSB don't do for me what they used to and although I've thought of stopping I'm still buying out of loyalty / not wanting to have a collection with gaps in it these days.

I stopped buying the CD singles when all those horrible remixes were released in the Very era. Liberation was the final straw and I didn't buy Yesterday When I Was Mad on CD single. I should have, since it's got an amazing swing version of Can You Forgive Her? but I didn't know back then. After Very, they released good CD singles with b-sides and the remixes on the other so I only got the good ones.

Funny thing is, I started getting a few of them now (and still come to the conclusions those remixes are terrible)

I guess I'm not done. I picked up the Japanese Actually with the 7" Always On My Mind recently.

I did have a rough set of rules where I'd only buy commercially available 12" on vinyl (no 7") but had to make exceptions when singles were only released on 7", so Minimal for example, Burning the Heather etc. I did used to get the odd pre-release/DJ only 12" but I think the last thing picked up was Psychlogical. I don't really go out of my way for that stuff.

I love the VF releases. Don't go too much into merchandising (t shirts are generally limited to if I go to a concert but make the odd exception if I really like the design). It was fun to get the Relentless jigsaw though. The teaset really is an anomaly for me, and perhaps under different circumstances I would not have bought it, but after some reflection I decided it made sense to me to get it.

A stopper point? Probably isn't one unless I really hit on hard times, but I do try to choose what I buy meaningfully rather than simply blindly picking every item up.
