The fifth single
Re: The fifth single
The Boy Harsher mix is really nice. I think the song, in general, is lovely in many ways, but it so lacks any sense of energy or drama on Nonetheless. This mix gives it a bit of vim and adds the vigour sadly absent on, basically, the entire album.
The intro sounds a bit Erasure to me, mind.
Drico.

I hope they haven't missed the opportunitybfor there to be a "More Dudley" mix...BoyStrange wrote: ↑Fri 08 Nov 2024, 11:25 am I have never heard the 1972 original version (or any other version), and I think "All the young dudes" (even the standard version) is a cathy song that is among the best PSB has released this year.
(I wonder how my reaction will be when I hear the 1972 version for the first time. Will I be disappointed?)
PS. It's interesting to observe that Anne Dudley has received songwriting credits for the song. (Source: Spotify)

Re: The fifth single
They've definitely made a mess of the double A-side choices. Boy Harsher and Richard X should have led this release.
Beauty is gloriously expansive. I'm reminded of some 90s Ibiza vibe before it bursts into technicolour glory. It's a distant cousin of Bright Young Things. The theme suits Neil, as he meanders through the time-honoured nocturnal urban landscape as a mature man of experience, as opposed to the young buck lurking in shadows back in the day, observing as ever. Back then, there was a sense that observation wasn't enough. Now? He seems at ease. A classic b-side.

He did when doing it live sometimes (Also, this is how it should sound live, sorry Neil)Straight_Talker wrote: ↑Fri 08 Nov 2024, 8:55 pm Why does Neil sing “I’m a dude, Dad”? Well, that’s what it sounds like to me.
Bowie just sang “I’m a dude”

Oh! This should be more widely mentioned.Ramzy wrote: ↑Fri 08 Nov 2024, 10:59 pmThe original is the Mott the Hoople version (which was written by Bowie but given away), which contains the "dad".Straight_Talker wrote: ↑Fri 08 Nov 2024, 8:55 pm Why does Neil sing “I’m a dude, Dad”? I was wondering why the PSB version is so different, it's because it's a cover of the version by Mott The Hoople.
The chorus is more muted and with adlibs, that's from the Mott The Hoople version. Even the vocal effect.
Everything, even the "when you're 25" is from this. Bowie's doesn't have the "when you're" I thought Neil added that.
Re: The fifth single
All the young turds seems to be getting more promotion that New London boy, which is a shame. Their version is unnecessary at best. The video is less interesting than a live cam inside an owl's nest that's been installed after the owls have left.

Yes! Boy Harsher intro sounds like Victim Of Love
my life is a mess, like an unmade bed....
Re: The fifth single
ATYD is better and more opened to a general public than NLB. The same thing happened with How can you expect to be taken seriously?? and Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you)/ICTMYOY.
i'm listening to it on repeat which is a good thing. I think it can get a bit of interest outside the fanbase.

Re: The fifth single
It’s a strong concept. Marrying a song about Neil moving to London with a cover of a song Neil would have been listening to at that time. Rounded off with those extraordinarily evocative old photos.
The only thing that lets it down is the music. ‘All the Young Dudes’ is PSB by numbers. There’s no ‘Always on my Mind’ style brass riff or different chord change to surprise and delight here. It’s difficult to know where they could have gone with it though. The original is a rock standard and they made it their own. They were authentic to themselves.
The song is catchy though. It’s been in my head for a few days. Bowie did a great job. Imagine giving that away.
A double A-side means nothing in the age of Spotify. I’m glad that Neil finally got to fulfil his teenage fantasy of being David Bowie. Good for him.

Re: The fifth single
I'm realising, the fact New London Boy is a single means they may end up performing it live.
That could be great.

Thankgod...Chris is always the better deal thenmatt74uk wrote: ↑Fri 08 Nov 2024, 5:52 pmYes, I thought this too but I think it's just the different production / mixing. Comparing the vocals to All The Young Dudes original mix to the Richard X mix on the Neil CD and you can hear the Richard X mix is just better/brighter/clearer but sounds the same to Richard X mix on the Chris CD.
I'm loving the Boy Harsher remix of New London boy.

All the young nudes …
If they want to go all perv daddy, then as well do what Troye did with Rush. What's this anti war posters and then cavorting on stage. I would have liked the boys do diff avatars of Bowie, would have been a nice tribute.
The song is awesome though..
Re: The fifth single
All the young dudes is like a b-side. It's underwhelming, a jumble of muddled production, and a bit pointless really. I can't work out why they bothered.
The Bob Harsher mix should be longer - it's amazing.
