MTV 80's and MTV 90's

#1 Post by Nickname »

When I go to watch some football matches on TV on the break of them, I like watching these channels to watch those videos of the big era of music videos. It's sad when you watch MTV nowadays with those horrible no music show or MTV Hits with so many lyric videos, the same you can watch on Youtube.

MTV 80's plays Pet Shop Boys on a quite heavy rotation, it's easy to watch West End Girls, It's a Sin, Always on my Mind, Heart and What have I done to deserve this?. I've also been watching Suburbia and Domino Dancing (a song I thought it was banned from MTV but it is played now on this channel).

MTV 90's plays Pet Shop Boys quite enough too. Of course, Go West. But also So Hard, Where the Streets have no Name? and New York City Boy.

I also think I could see Miracles on MTV 00's but I'm not sure.

I don't know if they were played so much on the main MTV at that time but I suppose it was more difficult because the channel was most oriented to American audiences (with adverts, other shows, etc) and these channels are being watched around the globe. Another reason at that time could be some homophobic rules from the channel that have benn surpassed nowadays (for example, with the video of Domino Dancing).

I don't know what has actually happened to the MTV Channels. They are certainly not like they used to be. I cannot even watch them now they are that bad. No actual music is on them. (The last time I looked).

I'm confused because as I said before, I thought the video of Domino Dancing was banned in the late 80's from MTV but this is not true.

This is Club MTV, a show where you could watch people dancing on a disco songs live or being taken from a video. Pet Shop Boys were part of it live or with a music video and yes Domino Dancing was shown on MTV (original American MTV) at that time. You can see here with a lot of people dancing and bits of the official video:

Not banned. There is Some Speculation that the thinly veiled homoerotic content of the Domino Dancing music video contributed to their commercial decline in the US.

Maybe the banned one was the video of Left to my own devices because it was too dark for the MTV. At least, I heard a rumour about that.

Yes, it was banned because of all the bumming going on in the darkness.

Well, most of the cable channels long ago discovered that they could make a lot more money showing the latest reality show nonsense than they could with actual music, history, science, discovery, arts, etc.

It is a shame boyjohn. The MTV channels are awful now - sadly. I used to love watching them when I was younger.

PSB talk here (min 28) about what happened to them with MTV. The homoerotic video of Domino Dancing could have been the end of their success in USA because PSB didn't play their videos so much after that (but I've seen many videos after Domino Dancing era of them on these MTV's oldies channels):

I must have been really nieve as a 16 year old as I had no idea of homoerotic connotations to Domino Dancing, it was just two guys fighting over a very attractive girl.
It wasn't until the 2000's I'd first heard of this story.
