2018 Remasters

#1 Post by very2000 »

Hi, I appreciate this topic would have been deliberated on numerous occasions, however, can anyone advise if there's any merit for the 2018 remasters over the 2001 releases for Please through to Bilingual?

I have the 2001 remasters and they sound fab but I wondered if the 2018 remasters surpassed those?

Many thanks :D

I remember establishing there's a discernible difference.
I even did blind tests, could tell when it was the 2018 remasters and they were indeed better.

They all sound good except for Yes and Elysium, they have a few problems...

Yes has few problems...mainly with the tracks 'Love Etc.' and 'Building A Wall'.
Elysium has lots of distortion...mainly on the bonus disc e.g 'Listening'.

A real shame that they didn't take the chance to superdeluxe things in 2018 as that's where the catalogue market has been heading. They'd have doubtless made more money from it but that's all a separate topic, I guess.

I knew of the version of 'Love Etc.' being different to the version on the original album/single, but wasn't aware of an issue with 'Building A Wall' - what was the problem with that?

If I recall - and it was a bit surprising at the time - Neil himself suggested to fans that if they have the 2001 Further Listening sets, there was no need to buy the 2018 sets! 😎

From Annually 2018: "Neil sparked some debate when he noted recently online that anyone who has bought the original reissues and who are not particularly interested in the remastering shouldn't feel the need to buy them again.

"Isn't the remaster better than the previous remaster?" Chris asks Neil.

"I think it is," Neil concedes.

"So that would be a reason for buying it," Chris points out, then adds, perhaps mischievously, "But I'm looking forward to the re-re-remastered ones."
Woof.

Building a wall has a glitch in the opening around 10 seconds in.

I find the 2018 remasters do sound better than the 2001 editions. There are slight variations on "Violence", "Love etc." and "Building a wall", the first two might pass as improvements and the third is barely noticeable.

The packaging is also improved. 17 years on, my 2001 Catalogue editions were very tatty, and they all had the issue with the label on the slipcase that tore the artwork. That was solved with the 2018 reissues.

Farrow also tidied up the track listings - if you compare the two editions of Please, for example, the 2018 edition is neater. I am possibly the only person in the world who noticed this...
Heaven is possible,

Reissuing a reissue just seems a missed opportunity. Unreleased material in expanded editions was surely the way to go.

Not sure which country you are in, but I had luck getting FLs from Discogs, Amazon & EBay.
