Pet Shop Boys only by project

#1 Post by telys »

The idea came to me removing all the regular stuff from PSB career and only keep projects (collaborations, musicals, soundtracks etc) and see if it would be enough? Enough material for a career, enough for a fan to enjoy. So it's all about the ART and not so much the POP

1984 Bobby O-years
1986 Disco
1987 Dusty colab
1987 Always on my mind
1988 I'm not scared, It couldn't happen here (film), Results (LM)
1989 Dusty songs, GAWI, Patient of a saint
1990 Dusty album
1991 Where the streets/LMM single
1992 Performance, Crying Game, Disappointed
1993 Go West
1993 Ab fab
1996 Confidential w T Turner, Hallo Spaceboy
1997 Somewhere
1999 Casting a shadow
2001 Closer to heaven, Break 4 Love
2004 BP
2006 Concrete
2007 Disco 4, She´s madonna
2008 In love with a german filmstar
2011 Most incredible
2014 A man from the future
2019 Musik
2019 Agenda
2020 Beautiful Laundrette
2021 Cricket wife
2022 Purple Zone

I would say it's a pretty thick pile of music even if we discard the regular albums and singles but I'm not sure if I would've been satisfied as a fan with only this. PSB would've been critics' darlings of course. Perhaps they would've been like The Sparks but not that forgotten/unneeded.

interesting idea - but not sure Concrete can be included. That has a bunch of songs that would fall outside the remit - i.e. all those fat juicy pop songs that we all love!

Enough for a fan to enjoy? Well no - not this fan at least!
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

A few of your dates need tweaking:

Losing My Mind (1989)
Results (1989)
Patience Of A Saint (1991)
Performance (1991)
Absolutely Fabulous (1994)
Woof.

This seems a bit undefined. Where do you draw the line between their regular stuff and extra curricula activities?

I do find it incredible that if we take the 14 regular studio albums and all their component tracks (let's say 140 tracks approximately) that this represents the minority of their output by quite a degree.

I know we all have our own ways of categorising their output but by my calculations there are roughly 230 other tracks on top of these pure studio album tracks that have been released. These are b-sides, side project tracks, exclusive single re-recordings, previously unreleased tracks, demos and re/mixes that are different enough to be considered tracks in their own right. I'd also include a live track and collaboration or two. Definitely wouldn't include B4L nor Je t'aime however.

So they're nothing if not prolific.

Are most of their remixes different enough to be considered separate tracks/songs?

Suburbia Album version - Single version
Yesterday When I Was Mad Album Version - Single Version
How can you expect to be taken seriously?? Album Version - single version

I'd consider these "separate". I wouldn't however consider the various remixes of Liberation for example, as separate.

Yep, it's a bit undefined. I just made the list in the spur of the moment from the top of my head. The list is proof that PSB would've been a great and popular band even without the regular albums.
I do count the great cover versions from 87 to 93 and I guess one should add West End girls because it really was sui generis at the time.
Concrete is on the list because of the type of concert... strings and prominent guests, really Debussy to a disco beat.

Well, just looking at remixes and single versions, you've got -

Opportunities (both versions reasonably distinct)
Suburbia (complete re-recording)
Always on my mind (album version has whole new section)
It's alright (complete re-recording)
How can you expect to be taken seriously?? (single version not really by them but was official single version)
I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing (single version really quite different)
Yesterday, when I was mad (a remix but radically different)

That's just from the first decade. Probably less of a thing in later years but Integral Perfect Immaculate mix, Love etc. PSB mix and Did you see me coming? (Possibly more mix) are so much more than remixes I consider them distinct entities.
