New fan, nervous about concert

#1 Post by Angi »

Hey guys. I'm not sure what I'm expecting here for responses -- maybe I just need to vent? Or someone to reassure me that I didn't make a mistake in buying this ticket, haha.

So here's the deal... I just got into PSB and I really love them so far. I desperately want to see them live, but I'm in the US so I guess I've missed the North American leg of the Dreamworld tour. So I bought a ticket for the Unity Tour they're doing with New Order.

The reason I'm nervous is... I don't know any New Order songs. I do have them on my "music to check out" list and I'm guessing I will probably like them (and I have about a year to check them out because the gig is next fall) but... what if I don't? I'm just scared that I did something stupid and maybe I should have waited for another year and a different tour.

Also, I know the articles I've seen about the tour all say that each band will play a "full set" but does that truly mean a FULL set? Like is the concert going to be twice as long as a typical concert? Or is each band going to have like half the time they ordinarily would? Like should I expect there to be fewer songs on the setlist compared to if I was going to a PSB-only gig?

Thanks for listening to my worries... I'm just feeling conflicted because I want to be excited that I have a ticket, but I'm also scared it won't be "as good" as a PSB-only show...?

(oh, I'm also a bit scared because it will be my first time attending a "general admittance" show which I guess that means no assigned seating? but that's a whole other thing not related to psb obviously lol)

Don't worry. If you like PSB you'll like New Order, or at the very least you won't dislike them.

I wouldn't over think it. Think of NO as an opening act (assuming they're even opening the show - I believe they switch places from show to show).

You almost certainly know some NO songs. Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday are considered standards as West End Girls, Relax, Tainted Love, etc are. Pick up a Best Of and familiarize yourself with the songs. They may not be your thing but at least you'll be familiar enough during the show.

This comment might be sacrilege to most New Order fans, but I recommend starting with the Best of from 1994. It’s definitely not the definitive New Order best of album, but it’s a good place to start for fans looking for something that sounds like PSB. Then i would move on to the singles collection from 2005.

Yeah, if you like PSB, you'll probably like New Order. There are some fantastic songs in their repetoire, I also recommend the Best Of album to get an impression of their work.

And if you don't like it, there's always Blue Monday. Everybody should experience Blue Monday live.

Thanks very much everyone especially for making recommendations about where to start with New Order, that's very helpful! (Just have to tear myself away from binge-listening to PSB, haha)

That´s a good idea! Also the Electronic tracks "The patience of a Saint" and "Disappointed" (to break the ice with some collaborations between PSB and the New Order's singer Bernad Sumner on production and composition...)

...and then, in addition to the "Best Of", check the New Order albums "Technique" (1989, their best IMHO) and "Republic" (1993). Also "Music Complete" (2015) to have a taste of a newer sound ;) . You´ll love them!!
This is not my signature.

Hey Angi - it's gonna be AMAZING so nothing at all to worry about!

I'm fortunate to be lined up to seeing PSB three times in 2022 and the Unity concert is the one I'm most looking forward to. New Order are my second fave band and it's also my first concert outside of the UK so all that is adding to my excitement. I think the PSB/NO fanbase has a good overlap you will find so musically I think you'll like them ... as others have suggested spend some time getting familiar with the most popular songs from the back catalogue and the first Electronic album also.

Which of the dates will you be attending - location wise? I have tickets for the MSG show where PSB are 'headlining' so they will be on second.
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

Oh cool, they're headlining the MSG show? How did you find that out? All of the articles I've seen just said they were co-headlining with NO and were going to alternate cities, but didn't say who was headlining which show, so I'd also been worried about that. I'm attending the show in Minneapolis! So if the alternating cities thing is true, and they're headlining MSG, that means they'd be headlining my show too! I'm so happy and excited to find that out!

Hey Angi

Well strictly speaking you are right - it's a co-headline tour but in terms of which band comes on first/second ... there was a theory that they are alternating ... and you can see which band 'headlines' (comes on second) if you look at the official Ticketmaster site. So in theory the band listed FIRST is the headline act that evening - MSG shows 'Pet Shop Boys and New Order'.

Think there is more on a thread in the main forum on this.

Just a theory - might be total rubbish

Ohhh shoot... that theory actually makes a lot of sense. I have a feeling it's spot-on... And PSB are listed second for my show. :( They are also listed second on my ticket. :( :( Feeling really crestfallen right now.

Won’t really make that much difference will it?

You are still gonna see two fantastic bands performing on one night …. these things don’t happen every day.

When this tour was rumoured to be happening way back in early 2020 I thought wow but didn’t believe it would actually be real … but yet here we are.

PS what’s bothering me is that I logged in to Ticketmaster today and can’t see my tickets listed in my upcoming events section!

Now I’m worried!
