Their saddest songs

#1 Post by Dog »

What would you class as their saddest or most moving songs? I appreciate this is subjective but it would be interesting to see if there some common choices.

I have always found the chorus of Dreaming of the Queen pretty heartbreaking. The death of love itself, then suddenly made personal:

'There are no more lovers left alive
No one has survived
so there are no more lovers left alive
and that's why love has died
Yes, it's true
Look, it's happened to me and you'

For all of us is another which I find affecting, outside of the context of the musical. Always good for a self-pitying wallow:

The secrecy and lies
The bitters tears I've cried
The days when I can't hide
from hopelessness inside

I'm not crying just for you
I'm crying for me
Look around and see
I'm crying for you, for me
for what we cannot be
For you and me
Baby, for all of us
For all of us

More recently, The forgotten child packs a punch, whether the child is interpreted at face value or to stand for something wider and more universal:

Where is the child?
Someone must know
Who saw her last?
Why did she go?
We were under attack
reaching rock-bottom
That was our focus
The child was forgotten

What are your PSB tearjerkers?
Woof.

I know they didn't write it, but I'd say, 'I Cried For Us'.
And also 'Wiedersehen'.
Both beautifully sad.

Yes, agreed... Those two were on my longer list. The lyrics for I cried for us are pretty cutting.

To Face the Truth. I cried the first few times I heard it when I was sixteen and experiencing the pain of unrequited love. It spoke to me.

Cricket Wife obviously. Music and lyrics strengthen eachother in the song.

I always remember Neil saying this in Literally:

“It's very very sad. Heartbreakingly sad. When we do it live I'll probably burst into tears at the end. I shall leave the stage and have some smelling salts.”

Still hoping to hear this live one day. Definitely one of their saddest songs.
Woof.

Some that spring to mind are:

I Made My Excuses and Left

It Couldn't Happen Here

King of Rome

King's Cross

Later Tonight

Leaving

Luna Park

Numb

Only the Wind

Your Funny Uncle - though I agree with a recent comment that it's also funny

Not sure about outright sad, but these tracks give me pause!

Hit and miss
A new life
I want to wake up
Breathing space

Numb may be divisive but there’s no denying the lyrics are some of the bleakest in the catalogue:

I just wanna be
taken away from all the madness
Need to escape
escape from the pain
I'm out on the edge
about to lose my mind
For a little while
I wanna be numb

Again written by someone else, I cried for us is another dark choice:

Love, you don't see
the pain in me
It's plain enough
plain enough
You're never here
to catch the tears
I cry for us

And of course there’s Love is a catastrophe, Neil at his lowest, and potentially his darkest lyrics:

What happens next?
With life I'm unimpressed
Pain like a cutter's knife
Never been lonelier in my life
Woof.

The entire Fundamental album is my bereavement record. I can barely listen to it these days without being taken back to 2006. Numb, for all its melodrama, is utterly devastating in those circumstances. It's a very bizarre moment when you experience a profound loss and then your favourite band immediately returns in full funeral director garb as if they are driving the hearse to the graveyard.

I totally agree. A somewhat overlooked jewel in my opinion.

It’s definitely their saddest dumpling related song.
