I think Actually is the best and the second best are Introspective and Very. The problem with Introspective was the concept of extended mixes (not all of them really good ones to be honest but the songs are amazing), the concept of Very is much better with not as many good songs as Introspective but a big production.dynamobjornen wrote:1. My opinion of "Electric" only improves with every listen -- even two years later!!

I agree 100%. The mark of all good/great PSB albums is how they improve, or should I say seem to improve with repeated listens. I have been really enjoying "Electric" over the last few months especially!
Mind you, reinstalling my (low-profile) 12" subwoofer, especially if you don't overdo the bass, brings much of the (or any) album to life. A well adjusted subwoofer set-up can really help with some of the ambience, especially in the 50-80 mhz range, as well of course as the big low beats/bass.

This is a very tricky poll.
In fact, I was amazed to see how easily you all came up with such linear lists of preferences, so I decided to play a little game. I compared any pair of PSB albums and for each pair I elected one winner. This determined a preference graph, which turned out to have cycles, meaning that I haven't been entirely consistent with my preferences. Then, I reduced the graph to remove redundant preferences. Assuming that cycles in the graph mean "I rate these albums the same", the result is:
1. Behaviour
2. Very
3. Bilingual
4-7. Actually, Introspective, Elysium, Please
8. Yes
9. Nightlife
10. Electric
11. Fundamental
12. Release
I think this list pretty much reflects my feelings about PSB albums.

Two years later and I can safely say Electric is my least played PSB album and therefore my least favourite, so last.
I rule. You don't.

It's only really Nightlife that I think is weak, and some of Release (not its b-sides!). But Electric, as fun as it is, just doesn't quite demand the re-listening of the other albums

I think that Electric lacks depth. It's fun and sure has it's moments, but in the end it feels quite shallow imho. I don't listen to it that much except for when I have to go for a long ride in my car.Tom Angel wrote:But Electric, as fun as it is, just doesn't quite demand the re-listening of the other albums

Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning.
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

The weakness of Nightlife is the song writing, and it contains two unlistenable songs - footsteps and the only one.retrofuturist wrote:Greetings,
I think more people would be baffled that Release and Nightlife could be anyone's favourite PSB albums.E-Mail Vampire wrote:It baffles me how anyone could like Elysium more than Release!
But then, that's not the theme of this topic, so
Retro.
Elysium on the other hand has some of the best production of their career. Sure, Hold On and Everything means something are boring, and Ego music better as an instrumental, but it's genuine, as warm as a duvet and utterly beautiful in place. Which is not something you can say about Electric.

Corrected that for you.Tom Angel wrote: The weakness of Nightlife is the song writing, and it contains two unlistenable songs - New York City Boy and the only one.

For me, "Electric" perfectly captures what I think the Boys were after... I'm completely taken to a hot summer day, New York City, 1983, with the sounds and influences of break dancing crews, Afrika Bambatta, legendary nightclub Paradise Garage and more. It works so well in that context and I love the album even more today.

I see Please as that album, HOWEVER, this IS the light to see it in. There's too much EDM, and not enough cowbell - I bloody love Vocal, Fluorescent, Thursday, Inside a Dream and Last to Die, but I really can't learn to love Shouting in the Evening and Love is a bourgeois construct.. Bolshi I like sometimes. There, for all those wanting to know!

Re: Where would you rank "Electric" in the PSB discography?
I've probably spent far too much time thinking about this...
1. Introspective
2. Very
3. Actually
4. Yes
5. Behavior
6. Please
7. Electric
8. Fundamental
9. Nightlife
10. Elysium
11. Bilingual
12. Release
I'd probably put the first 2/3 of Disco 3 before Elysium too...
