Could we hope for another PSB transformation and what would it be?

I used to put a watershed mark on 1992, PSB before and after but now I rather think it's 1994. Then Pete died, they went on their party tour in S Am and let it all loose. 10 years later the rebirth of PSB with Potemkin soundtrack. 5 years after that they became legacy and that's where we are now.
What is the next step? Could there be another transformation?
I guess they lost the chance of being writers/producers for a girl/boy band. Is Cricket Wife an indication? Will they write an opera? Will they open their vaults? Will there just be a continous stream of pop albums? There's a long career still ahead of them.

Greetings,

Good question. Not sure we can really expect another "transformation" from legacy to anything else. I expect they'll just continue as is (potentially with less touring due to a combination of COVID interruptions and age) until they've had enough.

I'm also not convinced that the "vaults" will be opened any time soon, given that on the Nightlife Further Listening discs they preferred to give us blank space and silence, rather than some of songs that they could very easily have included in that collection.

Retro. :)

Given they enjoy running a contrast against the current mood: it might be funny hats time again

Something bright, camp and pure pop could hit a mark.

Beyond that, I can't see them retiring. I hope they taper off with some low-key albums in the vein of Behavior/Release/Elysium and comfortably add colour to their catalogue.

I’d definitely like to see the return of costumes, in the vein of Very or Nightlife.

Two older gentlemen in costumes could potentially be a bit creepy. lol

The spikey straw costumes of recent times weren't bad, and they had a futuristic look for the Memory of the Future CD's. Those were reasonably "out there".

I know PSB have good taste, so I doubt it would be a bad look, but I think the sparkly suits and helmets is quite good enough.

Could there be anything that would return them to the top, the talk of the day?

I guess N&C themselves regard being "electronic purists" as a transformation. But for the common listener it's not that obvious.

Retirement. Irrelevance. Death.

They’re never going to top the charts again. They’ll get a brief mention on the TV news when one or both of them dies.

A fine legacy. Huw Edwards acting sombre with his frowny face on the BBC News At Ten.

Dark humour. Sad, fascinating, perhaps even true.

Perhaps a longer mention if they both died in some spectacular way.
