What is the rationale for pre-ordering albums?

#1 Post by Greendrake » Fri 15 Nov 2019, 10:34 am

Am I missing something, or is there totally no point in pre-ordering Hotspot CD/Vinyl (let alone digital), nor at least say 1 week before the release date (so that it gets actually shipped on the date and not later)?

IMO, pre-ordering would make sense if:
  • There was a risk of running out of stock. Not relevant to general/studio albums
  • There were bonuses for those who pre-order vs buy after the release date
  • The pre-order price is lower.
None of that applies as far as I know. Does something else apply?

I agree it's a weak point, but I preorder digital items so that I don't forget. Plus, it might be the case that the number of preorders might be of interest for artists/publishing companies to gather statistics and trends.

Or you know, you get to listen to them as soon as it ticks over to midnight.

I think there's a point in pre-ordering the CD and 12" singles because they can quickly run out or rocket skywards in price if you don't, but really don't see much point in reserving a standard version of an album. Something like "Fundamentalism" which was a limited edition version yes, absolutely. I'd love Amazon to do a an exclusive limited signed edition, they do this with a lot of artists these days. I'd pre-order that in a heartbeat.

I'm waiting for the Japanese version, potential bonus tracks there... other than that, yes, absolutely pointless.

The Japanese version is up for order on HMV.co.jp,
There is supposed to be 2 bonus tracks. Probably the b-sides or remixes.

The only reason I pre-order is so that I've something to moan about when it doesn't arrive on the day of release. :D

Well there's definitely an incentive for the artist, they get to secure sales without selling anything.
With that said though, we can all cancel preorders before the item is posted. To me it doesn't make a lot of sense either but it gives the marketing department something to focus on.

If you're going to buy the album then you may as well preorder.
Speaking of which, Hotspot is finally available for preorder in Australia now.

I thought the same thing this week, with all the hullabaloo about preordering Deacon Blue's new album being the only way you could get access to presale for the tour. Other bands do allow you a teaser track sometimes but it just seems a 2019 thing to do, along with presale, its retail companies trying to book sales as soon as possible - bit like christmas in November!!

I just love that they added a preorder incentive. I really think they saw this thread.
The art print looks good.

Apparently it's for pre-orders before Christmas.
Pre-Order any format before Midday (GMT) December 24th and receive your free album artwork hand signed print
Surely the quantity would be limited too? But they don't say.

I agree with the original Greendrake comment completely, specially when the OS has the most expensive cost for the PSB items.
But now it all make sense with the bonus print...preorder done! (the 2xCD, wich seems to be the best deal...)
This is not my signature.
