Reunion

#1 Post by vincenzosz » Sun 02 Jul 2017, 12:53 am

Just wanted to start a thread about this new track.

I'm usually the minority on these more "acoustic" style PSB's tracks. But I have to say I quite like this, it's more than I expected from a track excised from the vaults. It's the sound the majority of Rekease should of been like. It's got that guitar, with a good mix of electronics. I love the melancholy, raw and almost 60s sound. The lyrics are very PSB. Love, past, romantic, secrets (implied sexual identity) unrequited love, longing, etc.

A nice lost gem. Thanks Neil and Chris! 🙂

Thoughts...?

It's a real grower, quite an earworm. But maybe I'm just hungry for new stuff after Super!

Heard it a couple of times now and I really like it. How it never ended up on Release is beyond me.

It seems to reflect PSB having a period in their career- that the last 2 albums has addressed - of poorly selecting tracks for inclusion on albums.

Release, and Elysium in particular could have been FAR stronger if a few b-sides had been added and tracks committed.

I wonder if like successful authors such as Jonathan Franzen, that no one is prepared to argue with them and just accepts their view, despite them losing objectivity.

As to Reunion - I've not listened to it yet - i'll wait for the CD, I have no idea why!

Simple: it was recorded at least a year after Release was...released.

lol - well, yes, that would explain it, and given if it was that long after release any hope of it being an "of that era" b-side is unlikely too. I guess was it written before Release though and therefore could have been recorded and included potentially?

It's bloody good. This is how I like my PSB. I don't understand how they can discard such a beautiful song.
This bodes very well for the rest of the Further Listening CD's.
That they include so many unreleased tracks this time makes me wonder: did they take a different approach? Last time they only included Falling.

It's not a patch on Super in my opinion.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

I suspect they write as many if not more songs since the first 6 albums were released, but have less singles and formats to release them on at the time, so end up stockpiling a lot. Plus the early albums were released in a smaller period of time and much of what wasnt included on an album was put on the next. After the event and Former enfant could have been b sides from a fourth physical single from Fundy, but were held back for later. Also they record a lot of things for others too like Kylie, Banana ama, etc

Home recording has also made it easier to produce good quality demos inexpensively. In addition to that, the Boys were just writing a ton of material for the musical and for various non-LP projects. They evidently not only demoed but studio-recorded more songs than we'd known about for PopArt.

"Reunion" would have been a decent album track or b-side on Release, if it had existed at the time, but I can see why it wouldn't have fit well as a b-side to the actual PopArt singles we got, and its style wouldn't have been a good fit for singles from later albums, either. Sonically, it belongs with Release, and the FL set seems like the only appropriate setting in which to release it.
