Wasn't Winner initially written with Eurovision in mind?

Norton's a comedian; I don't think we can take his suggestion seriously. Besides, Pet Shop Boys doing Eurovision would be a HUGE step downward for them. No way they would even consider it.

It definitely would do more harm than good to their reputation. I would hate for them to be compared to acts like Blue, Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck, the general public considered these acts to be has-beens trying to revive their careers when entering, that would kill me. Maybe writing the UK entry could be the route to go down, Andrew Lloyd Webber seemed to come out of it with his reputation untarnished when he wrote the UK Entry.

Whilst their songwriting is leagues above anything on display today, the whole trashy spectacle is a shadow of its former concept when ABBA prevailed. I hope their integrity keeps them miles from ever seriously considering participating. 'Winner' was shit - which should tell you that their worst moment could have won...because it's on a par with this crap.

No, it was written about Eurovision, not as a potential entry.
Woof.

Maybe, just maybe writing a song would be acceptable, but actually performing? That'd be the end of their career as any kind of remotely credible artists.

Eurovision's a fallen giant, much like the once glorious Sanremo festival, which over the last decade has been widely criticized in Italy for its stalling formula. For years italian TV broadcaster (RAI) didn't even bother participating, as winning meant having to organize the equivalent of a second Sanremo in one year. This year Italy features with a rubbish but very catchy song, and I can see why it has chances to win: because musically it's a bit of a "Fernando" rip-off. But back on topic, it seems like some of the countries - including Italy - are trying to bring in songs with a slightly higher level of songwriting, rather than just following the usual dance/trash stuff from Eastern Europe. If that's a tendency it has yet to be seen, but maybe in 5-10 years PSB could consider writing something for the event - just like loads of valid italian songwriters consider Sanremo a plague, yet don't mind writing songs for its performers. In that sense, Norton's appeal could also mean - between the lines - that to get some credibility again, Eurovision would need the contibution of top-notch songwriters like N & C.

Eurovision is good for a laugh - there are some good songs in there once in a blue 'moon'!

(See what I did there?)

No, the PSB should leave well alone - left to their own devices, they probably will.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

I daydream about how much better PSB music would be if stopped worrying about radio-play/sales/singles/release-schedules and the like.
I sincerely *love* Disco 2 and listen to it straight through regularly.
