The Pop Kids is a masterpiece

#1 Post by telys » Sat 08 Apr 2017, 9:55 pm

I've come to really appreciate Pop Kids. I usually play the deep dub and the full story-version together to get a 10 minute version.

I regard Pop Kids as one of those few PSB epics where they tell a great story to sublime music with several layers of production. I can only find a handful other:
West end girls, Left to my own devices, Being Boring, Dreaming of the queen and Requiem in denim

I've recently thought this too. Bizarrely I don't find the Deep Dub or the Full Story to be as great as the proper album version. But I definitely have decided that the track belongs in the PSB Hall of Fame and Greatness.

Layers of production?

Layers of musical lines maybe.
What's for supper?

I really like the dub version. It's distinctive enough from the album version to be considered a completely separate recording, by me at least. Not sure if it's a masterpiece, but it's pretty good.

IMO, the longer full story version should have been on the album. Not just because of the extra verse, but because of the extra elements that are used in the last part if the track.

Also, I agree, the PSB dub version is very good.

Everything that we personally find great is a masterpiece, isn't it?

I find The Pop Kids great too btw.

I like the feeling of the song, but its similarity with "Vocal" makes me think they should have kept it for the third part of the trilogy.
"It was a dark and stormy night."
"You know what's wrong with your stories? They lack subtlety."
"It was a sort of dark and kind of stormy night."

Love the album and Marc Kinchen dub...The thing I don't like about the devices super version is that I feel it's like the 88 version shoe horned into a demo of the pop kids which is an infinitely better track imo. .but not as good as the 88 version of devices, obviously.

It is good. And it was a lead single, so why the hell they didn't make a video for it is beyond comprehension.

I love the Full Story, but the album version is definitive, in my view, simply because the Full Story omits the moment of ecstasy on the original right after the declarative "I am never going home." Basically, it gets preoccupied with the final verse and how to set it up and gets rid of the crescendo.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of tracks I like better but I recognize a masterpiece when I see one.

I love the album version the best, but feel masterpiece is a bit strong. It's a quintessential PSB track and has admittedly grown on me over the last 12 months.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

I'm not sure. I'm stuck listening to single at the moment.

It certainly hasn't reached my 'must play list' yet.
