The title kind of puts me off....

Should be an interesting read. No doubt they'll be some juicy PSB bits that Neil and Chris won't exactly be thrilled about.

Maybe this book will finally shed some light as to why Neil & Chris fell out with Tom? I don't think it's ever been exactly revealed why they seem to despise him so much? I remember watching a TV documentary about him, from around 2001 & PSB had forbidden the makers to use any of their music in it. I think it was on Channel 4, but can't remember much else about it, but it was a look back at his life & career etc.

Also, whenever I've seen Tom on TV or read interviews with him over the years, he seems to have a sense of regret that he is no longer in contact with them. Obviously, he was upset when in 1990, they chose not to renew his contract as their manager, but surely there's more to it then just that? Maybe this book will have some answers or at least his side of things, which could be interesting to read!...

At the time they stated they thought his take (which was around 20% of their gross income) was too much.

They also disagreed over releasing It's Alright as a single. They wanted to and Tom Watkins was adamant that it not be released as a single.

Never really warmed to it. I was a fan of the original Sterling Void version at the time and thought that the single mix was way to 'pop' for that song. Loved the Introspective version though probably because it was more faithful to the original.

I love forever "It's Alright", especially the Introspective version. From a purely business perspective, I can see why Watkins wouldn't want it as a single. Because PSB didn't write it, Sterling Void did, and they would get the publishing royalties etc. I love that PSB didn't care about that, - their insouciance and extravagant not-caring about money (despite singing about it, directly and indirectly) was a huge part of their 80's charm. Just as business, Watkins thought rightly that it wouldn't make much for Neil and Chris, and even less for him. I guess that's what a manager's for.

In any case, "It's Alright" as a single never mattered to me, in the US (not released as single here iirc and how quaint now there were borders for pop singles then), it was just a fantastic and forever wonderful song that still sounds great. And an extra layer of amusement and charm to it: the lyrics are ridiculous when you think about them. "People in Eurasia on the brink of oppression" is frankly hilariously dumb. The way Neil sings it in the video and utmost sincerity totally sells it, he knows the lyrics are silly.

Watkins took 20% ? Yeah, that does seem like a lot even by Hollywood standards, depending on what he did for them. But they were in their Imperial phase I suppose, and he believed in them. From 1984 to 1989, he succeeded in making them world-famous, broke them in the US and made them a memorable name almost everywhere. Their individual wealth and PSB's fame comes from those years, still. Twenty percent is a lot, but it seems It Was Worth It. Watkins did his job well.

I guess this will be almost as obligatory reading as Literally and Versus America.
