Do You Consider Disappointed a part of the "official" canon?

#1 Post by York Minster »

Obviously, the song is by Electronic. But there are plenty of songs in the PSB back catagloue that sound less "PSB" than Disappointed. Also, in theory Chris is not involved. But the songwriting and sounds are all classic PSB. Not like poppy New Order was ever that far off PSB anyway. In your mind do you consider it a Pet Shop Boys song? I do. Or do you consider it a song by Electronic that Neil sings on?
And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'

Plus he raps with his regular voice [BOOSH! BOOSH!]
[BOOSH! BOOSH!] (What was that?) Pet Shop Boys

Of course it is a song by Electronic featuring Neil Tennant. Especially since Chris is not involved in it. Did Neil write the lyrics?

No, it's by Electronic.

Disappointed does however bridge the gap between the Discography epoch and Very; it also marked the end of school and the summer when Erasure were at number one.

Whereas one can consider Getting Away With It to be the last great 80s pop song, Disappointed is firmly rooted in the 90s; it's 80s pop embellished with the spirit of euphoric rave culture. It's the sound of Neil on ecstasy.

its ok. I only like the ahh ahh ahhhhhh parts. the rest sounds kinda of like a dirge. do I consider it part of the PSB canon? no
its clearly a side project and chris had no part of it.

I prefer patience of a saint. its really quirky and sounds more like the PSB to me.

Pet Shop Boys could cover it and then it is canon.

Disappointed is one of the catchiest tunes I have ever heard, opposite to glennjridge the aahh aahh aaaahhh part is my least favourite of the song, I just wait impatient for the beats to kick in and Neil's singing.

You enjoy a song from 1991 :o

Let me ask this in a different way. If you had never heard Disappointed, and then someone played you the song and said it's a lost Pet Shop Boys demo from the Very era, would you believe that it is indeed a Pet Shop Boys song? I certainly wouldn't question it.

I do. (Consider it a secret PSB song.). The title alone could not be any more Neil. Good case to be made for "Patience of A Saint", too. (Song and title.) They're PSB songs feat. Bernard Sumner, as far as I'm concerned.

The original version musically sounds like Electronic. The Stephen Hague single mix gives it much more of a PSB twist. Yes, Neil wrote the lyrics but Sumner/Marr wrote the music.

PSB would have been able to write Disappointed's music, I actually always used to associate PSB with absurdly catchy tunes before I got to know them better, but I still do to an extent.

It's nothing short of beautiful. I remember hearing it on the radio in the summer of 92 and it was years before I heard it again (pre-internet days)
