Re: the most embarassing PSb song is...

Given that PSB have been a fanbase-only act with little to no mainstream exposure for over a decade now, I can't say that I see any recent PSB releases as embarrassing. No one sees or hears any of it aside from us, so what's to be embarrassed of? ;) Now back in the day when I was ultra concerned wit...

Re: Madonna is the new Status Quo

She should consider herself lucky. PSB are of the same vintage as her and they lost Radio1's support 15 years ago! She's being delusional and is sounding like Cliff Richard. Still it's a sign of the times. She was probably the last holdout from her era that was still able to command mainstream atten...

Re: Pet Shop Boys Day

Wow, 21 years ago. That's a lifetime for the college kids of today. Seems so strange to think of it that way. Here in the US they had pretty much zero profile at that time so there isn't anything to reminisce about from a commercial perspective. I do remember stumbling across Can You Forgive Her cd ...

Re: Katy Perry Halftime Show and Go West - coincidence?

Definitely coincidence. Reminds me of when Madonna released "Music" with it's cowboy-themed artwork, lots Erasure fans were calling it Erasure-inspired since Cowboy was only 3 years prior and they both shared the same US label.

Re: Any info about Winner CD single's case?

That used to be such a big deal to me back in the day... had to have everything in a jewelcase. LOL

I liked being able to file everything away in chronological order and read the spines in sequence, while those darn cardsleeves just sat in the rack anonymously. OCD, I know. :)

Re: Crying Game vs Go West in America

This is one of the main reasons that I wonder why a song from Very couldn't have worked at the time. Obviously as the years went on, PSB would have sounded out of place on the radio, but not in 93/94. Ace of Base had FOUR hits in those two years. They were foreign, and they had two shitty Scandinav...

Re: UK Question: Did BBC Radio 1 (prematurely) end PSB succ

Seems like the 1994-97 years were the precursor to the mainstream abandonment of PSB. During that time they got their share of airplay and exposure yet sold poorly. I think it became all too easy for R1 to drop PSB in 1999, esp after the poor response to I don't know what you want but I can't give i...

Re: Crying Game vs Go West in America

Yeah, I remember back in 1993 I was really puzzled as to how The Crying Game had become a radio hit, but took it as a positive sign for PSB's future prospects. But in reality, getting on US radio is largely a game of politics, and whatever the record co's decide to push is what gets played. I think ...

Re: Pet Shop Boys - Chart History

Wow, I'm surprised Liberation did that well. I thought I remember it being one their worst selling singles of the 90's according to some BBC or VH1 program from a few years ago. Oh well, I never really cared for year end lists myself, the singles released near the end of the year are always at a dis...

Re: Final results of poll: the single thing that made you a

For the reverse poll... I'd pick Wouldn't Normally Do This. After Go West was such a big hit, for this to only enter at #16 was a huge shock. It reached #1 on the airplay chart too, so it wasn't for lack of exposure. On the bright side it spent 3 weeks in the top 20 (16-13-20), something that only h...

Re: Final results of poll: the single thing that made you a

I narrowed it down to these three. A red letter day, because Single had made #14 and I figured the law of diminishing returns would mean that this wouldn't do much better. Drunk, because the first two singles had missed the top 10 despite being from an as yet unreleased new album and this had been a...

Re: You are a HUGE PSB fan, but.....

Timing really is everything, great observation. The global wave of anglomania made it a lot easier for PSB to get noticed. British influence in the US scene did wane after it's mid-80s peak and was finally washed out completely in the early 90's. I think it was around 1992 or so that the tide really...

Re: You are a HUGE PSB fan, but.....

I wonder how big a fan I'd have been if 85-93 had never happened. Imagine if PSB were a production/remix act whose only pre-1996 releases were collaborations and production work like Eighth Wonder, the two Electronic singles, Absolutely fabulous, and Hallo Spaceboy. Then say they launched themselves...

Re: You are a HUGE PSB fan, but.....

I think Love Etc is as good as almost anything else they've done, The Way It Used To Be is beautiful, and the Pandemonium Tour was great and easily their best tour. But aside from the Yes era, and a couple of other tracks from the 2003-present years, my fandom is pretty much all about 1985-1993 era ...
