Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

Yup, I recorded it on VHS at the time. That and The South Bank Show special the following February were my most prized PSB VHS possessions at the time...

PS The Melody Maker booklet from '91 was also gold at the time. Halcyon days.

Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

To be fair, it did “fly off the shelves”. It sold 250,000 copies really quickly. It took another 25 years to sell the second 250,000…. Hmmm. I agree upto a point, but Discography on content alone should be revered and up there with the likes of Queen Greatest Hits, ABBA Gold and The Beatles 62-66 6...

Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

[I miss the PSB of, say, 1991 in much the same way I miss being a teenager. It was fun while it lasted, but never as good at the time as one might imagine it was in sepia-toned retrospect. But they and SEPIA-TONED? We’re talking about NINETEEN 91, not EIGHTEEN 91, cowboy. Perhaps it is me who has c...

Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

What do you think we could expect from this show?. A duet between Years on Years and PSB only or something else?. I can't tell you what the chosen song or songs will be, but I can guarantee lots of thigh slapping. But enough snidery. I, for one, think it's tremendous that they are invited to mass-m...

Re: Hating PSB

Pet Shop Boys have always been incredibly divisive, in my experience. I put some of that down to low-level homophobia - but not simply that. It's bad enough for their "critics" that they are poofs, but it's unforgivable that they are poofs with attitude, poofs getting above their station w...

Re: Do you think PSB took their aesthetic from The Sparks?

https://youtu.be/vtGBcvBqOJs Here’s Edgar Wright going through a list of his favourite Sparks Songs. At about 9 mins in, he says that when Sing my way came out, it must’ve been a bit galling for them, that everyone was saying it sounds like PSB, when really it was the other way round. Edgar Wright ...

Re: Do you think PSB took their aesthetic from The Sparks?

What strikes me most about the Sparks Brothers hype is just how needy the people behind it are for acknowledgement from Pet Shop Boys. It's almost creepy, this desire for a nod from Neil and Chris. They get mentioned in this film in ways that lead one to conclude, ironically, that Pet Shop Boys are ...

Moderator Comment : We've spent the evening cutting the filth and ugliness out of this thread. A few innocent or on-topic posts have had to be sacrificed in the process. It was impossible to excise the poison cleanly without taking another week, so apologies for the imperfect thread surgery. I have...

Re: Their saddest songs

Sadness suffuses their entire milieu. Almost everything is coated in a varnish of quiet despair. I think that's what makes their euphoric moments so ecstatic. They emerge from a place of poignant suffering, and the contrast is both intoxicating and liberating. Every glorious escape into happiness is...

Re: It’s A Sin - Years & Years cover

why allow Olly to do a cover of it earlier in the year and agree to produce the collaboration with Elton where all proceeds go to his AIDS foundation? ... I just don't get the idea that they'd be precious about the song being "framed" as "about AIDS" when some of their greatest ...
