Re: Phil Harding on his PSB remixes

Harding’s Always on my mind remixes (he’s credited on the “Dub” mix too) really feel like a demo for the Introspective version - the stripped back dub, the twinkly new melody and the “House” breakdown. I’m glad they improved on it, the new riff is overused to the point of irritation and, as a whole...

Re: Do you think PSB took their aesthetic from The Sparks?

Sparks were a glam-rock band before Giorgio Moroder transformed them into something cool. They weren't even a duo. It's not Sparks who influenced Pet Shop Boys - it was Moroder. Sparks were largely crap before Giorgio and, let's face it, largely crap after him. The Number One Song in Heaven is geniu...

Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

Heterophobia doesn't exist, white racism neither. You cannot be oppressed when you're the dominant force. 1) I'm not homophobic. 2) Men can hate women, women can hate man, straight people can hate gay people and yes, gay people can hate straight people. Because of the gender or sexual orientation. ...

Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

I think some people want Pet Shop Boys to be a cuddly, conservative "national treasure" that it's "okay to like" without frightening the horses on BBC1. If there was once a rationale for "studied cool", coded language, mystery, and shadowy messaging, that's been blown u...

Re: Top 20 - 80s Duo (Classic Pop Magazine)

Without taking this throwaway list too seriously, if the ranking is based on what happened in the 1980s there is no way Yazoo can feature above Eurythmics. Yazoo had four great singles and imploded. Eurythmics had double that and hung about for the decade. No comparison. I'd also have had Climie Fis...

On another unrelated note, though somewhat connected to the time, I see poor Janice Long has died, aged 66. I always liked Janice - she seemed to love pop for pop's sake and had a sense of humour about the ridiculousness of it all.

Re: What are your PSB's and related albums you never really bothered with before lock down but love now?

But will West End girls feature on '85 or '86? It hit no. 1 in January '86 but they may stick it on '85 so they can potentially stretch them out a bit, although these releases do sometimes have two hits by the same artist in one release, so maybe it's not a problem. We'll see. I'd expect PSB - if t...

Re: Top 20 - 80s Duo (Classic Pop Magazine)

Yes, they are the apex predator of the genre - if we can say that an '80s duo is a genre rather than a configuration. The only ones who deserve consideration as alternative choices are Wham! and Eurythmics, with Erasure getting an honourable mention. Tears for Fears had a couple of good years before...

Re: What are your PSB's and related albums you never really bothered with before lock down but love now?

Amazingly I found a sealed copy of the hardback yearbook 83 for sale for just £6 and was hooked. Have 84 and 83 Extra as well now. Pre-orders for 84 extra are now up and it's almost as good as the main release. Still a few big omissions like Don Henley and Level 42 but that shows what a great year ...

Re: Closer To Heaven OCR - Red Vinyl Reissue

The mockney accents....wow 😆 Second rate PSB album imo..full of clichés..just listening to it now... Yes, I think it is the definitive nadir of their career. That was mainly Jonathan Harvey's fault, though. The songs themselves have their moments - it's the stereotypical hackneyed hokum that become...

Re: PSB on BBC1 on New Year's Eve

It's an interesting thought, that Discography was too early. When you consider the freshness and vitality of Very, it does seem like a book closing on an era. Have you seen the Farrow/3a cover mock-ups that surfaced recently? I'm interested in how it looked in context at the time as it was a little...

Re: Fantastic Man interview [Pet Text]

Thanks for posting what is arguably the best PSB interview of recent years - certainly the most revealing Neil chat. There was an intensity to the questions that led to lots of insight. The news that Chris has been working on lots of music is hardly revelatory, but it was nice to have our perception...
