Re: Weak production

Well, that escalated quickly. :shifty: Clearly, I have offended you with what was intended as a bit of throwaway humour. Apologies if so. Not my intention. That said, it's quite something that we all feel differently about so many tracks. I'm not sure it needs to degenerate into personal invective, ...

Re: Weak production

Pazzo is merely the interlude that allows the abdicating dictator to escape under cover of darkness to the solace of the inner sanctum. Groovy and Happiness, meanwhile, vibrantly amplify the Super theme of escaping one's head. I'd have them any day over the soporific blandness of Winner and the spra...

There's no one song on electric that reach the quality of Legacy.
You clearly have an ear for music. Sadly, it's Vincent Van Gogh's.

Re: Weak production

Price has rejuvenated them, bringing a much-needed vitality and drama to their work. Andrew Dawson did a beautiful job with Elysium, but Pet Shop Boys always tend to sound their age when reflective. That's sort of inevitable: with experience comes wisdom, but it's anathema to pop. The challenge for ...

Re: Weak production

Trevor Horn is 112 now and reduced to doing bizarre 80s nostalgia shows on German TV. I like Trevor, but it's clear he hasn't a clue that he worked with them as recently as 2006. He was part of the review panel on BBC Radio this year when On Social Media was up for judgement. It was obvious he's for...

Re: Keeping An Open Mind on An Open Mind

He's mellowed.

Disco-Tex and the "Sexelettes" sent him over the edge. He found solace in the bottle.

Re: Keeping An Open Mind on An Open Mind

It's a great song that showcases their brilliant ability to be effortlessly evocative and, like all of their best late work, nostalgic. The production is superb, and if the rest of the album is of similar quality in terms of production and tone, I will love it more than Electric and Super, both of ...

Re: Dreamland / No Boundaries / An Open Mind single - October

Dumb down Neil? The very fact he has an extensive vocabulary and isn’t afraid to employ it is precisely why he’s the great lyricist he is! This is his killer app! When Chris adds that layer of banal moronicism on top, cut with a dash of euphoric melancholia, you have the greatest pop act of our life...

Thank you for that wise analytical insight, nickname. If only I saw the world with the clarity and perspicacity that you do.

Re: Keeping An Open Mind on An Open Mind

I've read this post very carefully and now I understand the general difference between Drico and myself when it comes to praising particular PSB songs. It seems it can be reduced to this "emotional" element or rather his perception of inner beauty, purity and innocence he finds in best PSB songs. T...

Re: One thought about the PSB songs we have listened this year

Can someone tell me why some of you guys are so rude to nickname? He probably opens too many topics and polls but, apart from that, he’s only giving his opinion in a polite way. What’s wrong with that? Agreed! We must also remember that English is not nickname's first language! He speaks Poll-ish v...

Re: Keeping An Open Mind on An Open Mind

I agree. I think there's a deep sadness in some of Neil's reminiscences - a melancholia for past times and past loves - and that's one of the reasons he is such a compelling storyteller. They - or Chris - may well have felt it was all a bit passe or nostalgic when they need to present themselves as ...

Keeping An Open Mind on An Open Mind

Every so often they release something that just blows you away on first listen. Think Can you forgive her?, A red letter day, Leaving, and Vocal. An Open Mind is the latest example. Sadly, for reasons best known to themselves - and I'll speculate wildly that Chris wielded the veto - this one will no...
