I just did a quick count from an online discography and counted that they have released 34 singles. But that includes the 3 or 4 early ones that definitely didn't break top 40 or even 75 (the discog didn't have the chart placings), so there's something very fishy in that figure.

What's the Guinness's definition of a hit, btw? Top 40 or what?

Erm, neither Madonna or Cliff Richard are bands and The Beatles have released less than 37 singles, possibly?

It is about bands, not artists. As for the Beatles, they were around for only 6 years, so perhaps they didn't have time to release enough singles. the Manics figure baffles me though, since – I checked – they really have released only 34 singles and the first couple didn't even chart.

Er, maybe the word bands might give you a clue. Not sure how many singles the Beatles released? Maybe it wasn't that many.

Actually I got the figure 30 and I did count your list twice. In addition to that they have only released 4 singles, all pre-Stay Beautiful: Suicide Alley, New Art Riot EP, Motown Junk, You Love Us (the 1st time around). I don't know whether any of them reached top 75, Suicide Alley definitely didn't, but still according to all discographies they have only released 34 singles.

Anyway, they'll go up in that chart with the release of the new album, I don't see the Bee Gees charting again.

I just realised how *terrible* the Beatles were. With the exception of Hey Jude, there's precisely nothing on their singles discogrphy that's actually good. Strawberry Fields Forever was great too but only when Candy Flip covered it. Oh, how I wish the Beatles had never happened.

Yes, they'll surpass the Bee Gees, but continue to progress hand in hand with REM, U2 and Depeche Mode, since all four bands are in quite a similar autumnal stage of their career. DM has currently the upper hand, since the campaign for PTA is just starting and REM won't release anything for at least a year and there can't be more than one single coming from U2's Atom Bomb.
