Yeah, the days of CD issues is probably dead. But it seems that some kind of digital release that can go onto Spotify/Apple, etc that is kind an overview of the best songs of their career(say 100 songs or so), including a lot of deep cuts would be a decent idea.

Yes, we'll just have to live with the lack of a definitive best of collection on physical media that does them justice.

Still, maybe they could do a limited edition for us over 75s and those suffering from underlying conditions like Collectionitis and Archivism.

Greetings,

In terms of compilations, at this point, only a complete singles Discography makes any sense.

A chronological single by single journey through the career of the Pet Shop Boys. The dizzying heights and ambivalent lows, in order, as experienced along the journey. An A-sides equivalent of Alternative and Format. Anything else would just be a bloated version of Ultimate.

Retro. :)

They should take a leaf out of OMD's book. Their recent greatest hits was the way to do it.

That's all, isn't it... 4CDs with all the singles, 2CDs for the commoners (picking "forty singles for forty years" could be a good angle, mostly the ones from the setlist), and a double vinyl (80-90 mins) with the absolute biggest singles. Make it happen Boys!

Three different publishers to deal with, will not happen. Also nobody but us here will buy it.

Personally I am not waiting for a new compilation. Discography, PopArt, Ultimate and 25 Years will do for me.

Well, I would imagine only the Bobby 'O' singles would pose any trouble. The post-2012 singles are all theirs, and Parlophone would probably be game for any milking. It's not out of the ordinary to have these sorts of releases, at least in limited editions. Digitally it's just a playlist anyway. Just one look at SDE, you'd see what kind of bloated crap is sold and manufactured, while this has almost a historic significance for UK pop music. Make it dirt cheap (like Phil Collins did with his recent box set), and it would sell pretty well, I reckon. To really hit a nerve, even Human League managed to get a 3CD collection for a band who's had only minor success after the 80s. Lulu, who I've never heard of, is releasing a 3CD "Gold" type of thing, just been announced.

Going through a list I had back in the day, these four discs wouldn't include a couple of hit singles they co-wrote or were featured on. Maybe put "I'm not scared [Single Edit]", "Nothing has been proved [Demo]" and "Losing my mind" on CD1, "Hallo Spaceboy [Single Mix]" on CD2 and "She's Madonna" on CD3. So much good stuff!

That would be the 5th disc.
I find it strange that PSB don't do as other great bands and release major archive series. THe further listening discs are just the top of the icebergs.

Hello guys. Wait another year for us to see it live. I have tickets for the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin.
Anyway, I already saw what was going to happen because the pandemic was not controlled. It is impossible to hold a concert with these conditions. And I think that a concert in which we cannot jump and dance is not enjoyed. We have to wait.
We hope that they will offer us more material during this year.

That's a superb list, but I'd be more inclined to pull that together as a Spotify playlist or from my own collection (I reckon I have all of those covered), so a disc set, whilst lovely, would really not add any value for me.

The Boys to their credit don't seem to spend much time looking backwards (more so pressure from Parlophone I reckon that something like Ultimate even exists), so I'd rather see a new album, or even an EP, and some fresh remixes of old classics if we really want to gaze into the past.

It goes without saying that we'd all prefer a new album to a best of.

I agree with Future Lover. Given the incontrovertible pap that gets archived and catalogued on physical media - and still somehow makes some kind of profit - the "who will buy it?" argument doesn't really stack up. I'd be pretty certain that all of the PSB hits compilations to date have outsold all of the Further Listening releases and by quite some margin. Nobody felt the FL series shouldn't have been released.

This is not a hill I want to die on, but the best argument against some form of new best of (beside personal disinterest) is the licensing question.

I wonder if PSB will follow the seemingly en vogue trend started by the likes of Bob Dylan and sell the rights to their entire songwriting catalogue, especially now as their main moneymaking wheeze, touring, is off the table. Surely it'd fetch a few quid. I wonder what opportunities such a sale could herald for the way the catalogue is marketed/abused (Delete as appropriate).

Drico.
