It really bugs me that so many are saying that masks are ineffective - purely on the basis that virus particles are so small - when research has shown they increase protection five-fold (because particles travel in large water droplets). I just read in Hong Kong just about everyone has been wearing a mask and there is virtually no transmission there. I can’t help thinking we should be encouraging people to protect themselves like that in any way they can. If we don’t have enough masks then people should make their own masks - kitchen roll is usable apparently. Or a scarf is simplest and looks best. Anything is better than nothing. It might make a huge difference.

However, my discovery, just stick a very little bit of loo paper up each nostril, and keep your mouth shut. Voila! Instant, invisible protection.
Lol.... sadly, that won’t stop it. You need to protect your eyes as it (and other viruses) can land on your eye ball and eye lid - mucus membranes etc... Biggles here we come!

I see Madonna has just cancelled the last two dates of her tour, on police orders.

To be fair, I think at this point she was looking for any reason to cancel the rest of that tour that didn't put all the blame on herself.

Yes, that’s the impression I get. She probably wants to get herself fit for Parkrun on Saturday.

Hi, guys

Greetings from Spain. This subject worries me a lot. I have tickets to the concert at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin and it would be a disappointment if the concert was cancelled.

No longer only for the flight and the hotel, but because although I am a fan since the beginning of PSB (several decades ago :D ), I have not had many opportunities to see them live and this is a great opportunity for me. I think Berlin would be a fantastic place.

Still, nobody is gonna answer why now? Why all of a sudden are the media trying to scare the public? Viruses and other diseases have been around for ages. The flu has been killing people left and right but I never saw any concert cancelled nor any news bulletins. The media are full of shit, run by perverts and hacks who get off on scaring the public producing clickbait crap to stay relevant. How many times did they blow oncoming hurricanes out of proportion and when they arrived on land they weren't half as bad. The same goes with the virus: The media created this hysteria over a random flu virus, then the politicians (most of them leftwing morons) jumped on the bandwagon in order to give off the impression that they care. Typical leftwing grandstanding. Why does socialist Conte suddenly care about an epidemic? How come he didn't care about the diseases that illegal migrants could have been bringing into the country when he invited them all in? Now suddenly he is concerned? Thanks to his overreaction, the Italian economy is tanking and the entire country is in utter disarray. Not because of the virus but because of idiotic, ineffective actions and the fomenting of fear and panic. Imagine if we had dealt with it like with any flu season. We would have barely noticed anything. And come next year, we're gonna shut the entire world down again? Ultimately, this is all about shutting down political opposition and to scare people into submission to an all caring government. How many weeks since the last Hong Kong protests?

I am in Hong Kong. 95% of people here are wearing masks. There has been no significant community outbreak in Hong Kong - there are under 70 active cases at present. Macau has zero active cases. Both HK and Macau have land borders with mainland China. But masks don't work.

The protests are ongoing, just on a smaller scale and not reported internationally.

Please don't listen to literal Nazis in this thread, and instead trust the myriad of experts who explained why this is important. It's not just a flu, unless you compare it to the 1918 one. Does any country really want to tank their own economy, are you out of your mind?

Thanks for the on-the-spot report. Yes, I wouldn’t be surprised if the widespread adoption of masks turns out to be the real reason why China got its outbreak under control.

I have my scarf and loo paper ready for its first outing tomorrow.
