Classic Pop magazine

#1 Post by DJ Pat »

Usually a good read, especially the last year or so, with decent in depth features on the likes of Boy George, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, A-ha etc, as well as voting Erasures latest as 'best album' (I disagree, despite being a fan, but that's irrelevant here)

I thought it was concentrating on the other side/alternative of 80s music, synth, new romantic, indie that the likes of Q magazine tend to ignore, but lately it seems to be a Q mag wannabe, with a free supplement on Live Aid, which is completely uninteresting, boring and full of quotes by the usual suspects that we've been forced to watch and read over the last couple of decades. Nothing new at all.

I thought that if you wanted stuff such as this, buy Q mag, with its constant hammering the readers with repeat articles on rock bands we all know about, are bored shitless of, such as Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, U2, Genesis, Bob Geldof etc etc blah blah blah

I got the latest issue of Classic Pop today, skimmed through it, was very disappointed and left it on the bus, I was furious how shit it's become in such a short space of time. I'd normally take several days to read through it, but this bus journey was from Falmouth to Truro (Cornwall), a mere 40mins.

I did The Sun crossword instead, which was more exciting, riveting and commanded more brain cells than that useless waste of paper.

Anyone agree with my scathing, insulting remarks or am I just a bitter, miserable guy who expects too much for his cash?

I think it has been horribly amateurish from the start. Full of bad writing, bad judgement and inexplicably thorough articles on bands like China Crises and Bananarama. Not everything from the eighties is worth reviving. It tries to be something like an eighties version of Mojo but falls very short.

On the letters page they have hilarious people who write in correcting grammar and spelling mistakes, very troll-esque, which says it all really

If the magazine used cheaper paper I'd be able to wipe my arse with it, but it's not even good for that

It must be doing something right or it wouldn't have lasted this long(which I doubted it would when first launched).

This most recent edition has, however, hit an all time low. I read it in 20 minutes in Smiths. Having said that, it could have something to do with the fact that for me, music hit an all time low in mid 1985 and was only revitalised by a certain pop duo with a record that to this day still sounds modern.

Next issue of Classic Pop includes

How the massively legandary Nirvana & Kurt Cobain are at making suicidal, miserable music

Neil Young: We'll tell you once again how great he is

Eric Clapton - He plays a guitar, just in case you'd forgotten

Shane MacGowan exclusive - ''I died years ago''

Sting - the mile high tantric sex legend speaks - again

Stone Roses are getting back together, oh no they're not, yes they are actually, oh hang on, not just yet

Blur announce world tour of obscure new songs and rubbish versions of their most dreary hits

Phil Collins exclusive - ''I saw a homeless person once in 1988''

Thing is, after you've covered PSB, OMD, Duran, Depeche, Spandau, Frankie, Human League, Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Boy George, S/A/W and U2...there's not much else and you're left with the ""also-rans".....

Too many silly errors. If you're writing a magazine about a specialist topic and selling it to fans then you have to make sure it's factually correct!

I emailed Ian Peel and told him exactly that. In his latest front page editorial there were four spelling and grammar mistakes...and I hadn't even reached the contents.

They even got the spelling wrong of Phil Oakey (Oakley) several times in the same piece about the Human League.
And it only has one person reviewing the albums - it might as well be the blog of Wyndham Wallace -
They seem to regurgitate the PR releases and use old interviews to pad out new features.

It’s Q in all but name nowadays. I’m just waiting for a Jesus And Mary Chain feature and breakdown of Paul Simon’s career.
