Rating the Discography

#1 Post by Drico One »

I've long been perplexed by people awarding points out of 10 for Pet Shop Boys songs and albums. I've never understood why people needed 11 rating levels to make a definitive judgment of a track. Even more weird to me are those fractional ratings, say 7.2 out of 10. Can people really break down their preferences to tenths of points?

On the back of Electric, I thought I'd attempt to categorise each song from their 12 studio albums as an imperfect measurement of my preferences. For a bit of fun, I thought I'd add in the two b-side compilations, Disco - which I've always considered a proper album, Discography - the definitive greatest hits collection, and Relentless. I haven't bothered with PopArt and Ultimate, the live recordings, or the rest of the Disco series - all of which I consider largely redundant.

My ratings key is quite simple:

3 = Imperial
2 = Essential
1 = Enjoyable
0 = Oh dear

For me, the majority of Pet Shop Boys tracks are enjoyable, so these tracks get 1 out of 3. Some are better than that - these are the tracks that I think are essential. They get 2 out of 3. A rare few are what I call imperial - the classics, 3 out of 3 gems. Fewer still are appalling mistakes. They get 0 points. Dividing the cumulative points score for each album by the number of tracks on the album gives the overall album score - an average rating of the album. This is not a perfect means of establishing my favourite albums (it doesn't take account of the fact that some albums are greater than the sum of their individual tracks - and this method of classification tends to favour records that have a couple of classics and no missteps), but it gives some insight into how I rate the tracks on each album if not the album itself.

I'm doing this more as a record of what I feel about the catalogue right now. I may revisit this in a few years to see if anything's changed. If people would like to do something similar, please feel free to add to this thread. It could then act as an interesting comparator of people's preferences.

Anyway, long story short, here's how the albums rated:

1. Discography (91%)
2. Disco (78%)
3. Actually/Behaviour (70%)
5. Please (64%)
6. Electric (63%)
7. Introspective/Very (61%)
9. Fundamental (53%)
10. Relentless/Bilingual/Nightlife/Elysium (44%)
14. Alternative (42%)
15. Release (40%)
16. Yes (39%)
17. Format (36%)

Here's how each track breaks down. Where there is a difference between my rating for the album version of the track and my rating for a single or other version, an asterisk is displayed.

Have a look at my taste in music:

That’s the thing about negative energy, about hatred. It can be positive. It throws into relief all the things you know you like. It tells you, by elimination, what you’re about. Sometimes you can only define yourself by what you hate. Hatred becomes an inspiration; it makes you think, “What I’m doing now I totally believe in, and I don’t care what other people say.” Guided by hatred, you don’t have to follow the herd. - Neil Tennant

I'm officially dropping my schtick of pretending Disco 2 was a masterpiece. Of course it wasn't, and That Joke's Not Funny Anymore.

But Disco 3 really was kind of special and unique in its way. Not complaining about its exclusion, just musing.

:arrow: I'm equally complexed about people who give empirical marks to their opinions, as if it's proof of something.

Love the enthusiasm of "I'm feeling this album so much, I'd give it a 10!". More than filling boxes on a form.

In some ways, it's a more human gauge, but equally irrelevant to anyone outside the fandom.

(Although on that note, reviewers seem to be rating Electric higher than people in this thread so far!)

If I were to sit down an analyse Very, I'd find a bunch of tracks that were immediately dated and quite minimal in their Pop-ness.

An album is a collection of feelings that combine (with the artwork, the video clips, the stance of the performer on stage and in interviews, current affairs) to amount to something more than just a sequence of numbers.

It seems like this rating system doesn't make Behaviour out to be the second coming of jesus like the fanbase generally does. I will compile my own list later but for now I can say that Electric would probably get the highest rating in this thread so far and the old classic albums by far the lowest. Prepare to rage.

Please 87%
Behaviour 83%
Actually 77%
Very/Bilingual 58%
Alternative 56%
Elysium/Introspective/Nightlife 50%
Electric/Fundamental 48%
Yes 45%
Format 31%
Release 20%

Which is interesting, because without such a scientific method, I'd rate them more like:
first rank: Actually/Alternative/Behaviour/Please
second rank: Bilingual/Elysium
third rank: Electric/Introspective/Very/Yes/Nightlife
fourth rank: Format, Fundamental
fifth rank: Release

Disclaimer: I am rubbish at counting so may have miscounted some of the totals.
2nd disclaimer: Lots of borderline cases. Another day may be different.
3rd disclaimer: I feel Electric, and to a lesser extent Elysium, are too recent to evaluate clearly. I have been very stingy with "3-Imperial" ratings after 1993 (only 3, one of which is perhaps over-generous) as I feel the "Imperial phase" is so called for a reason. time will tell if I have underestimated the new material.

I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing but I couldn't resist a bit of Drico-endorsed indulgence. I think it's fair to say I like Please more than most people seem to.

Interesting results, though it should be noted the way I gave ratings was kind of rapid fire. Also worth pointing out that an 0 rating doesn't mean I dislike something, merely that it's significantly less enjoyable than the base level of 'enjoyable' required for a 1. The only 'true' 0 in their catalogue is Winner, and even that has pretty bits, and I wouldn't skip it - I have too much respect for their vision of the album in its entirety.

Also, it's interesting to compare the above leaderboard with the way I feel about the albums overall. Alternative is probably in my all-time top three releases by anyone. For completeness, let's apply the same criteria to the albums themselves. Where there's a tie, I've ranked them by personal preference.

Re: Rating the Discography

Please note, a couple of posters have marked Alternative out of 93 (31 tracks), but didn't include Girls and Boys (as Drico did). So their percentage for Alternative should be slightly higher.
