It's alright 7" Question

#1 Post by SIN » Wed 28 Nov 2007, 9:57 am

The sleeve I have has no print on the front or back sleeve?

Just pictures of neil and chris, is this a mispress?

Checked discography, no reference.....

no it's the UK release with "wrap-around-band". Sounds like the latter is missing on your copy...

Its not a mis-print, the 7" and 12 " came in two formats. One being the standard version with Chris on the front and the "Pet Shop Boys It's Alright" text along the bottom in red and blue and the track listing written on Neils left cheek on the reverse...(12R 6220 and R 6220), the other came with a black paper "wrap around" with these track titles and listings on it, leaving the sleeve devoid of any type (12RS 6220 and RS 6220). Sounds like your copy is the latter with the black paper wrap around missing. They were pretty flimsy.

For years I failed to notice that the standard 7" sleeve has Chris on the front while the wrap around sleeve has Neil on the front.

These sleeves must have cost them a fortune!!

two 7" versions, two 12" versions, a 10" remix, a 12" remix, the cd AND the cassette....thats 7 copies of the same release!! It reached number 5 in the UK. Perhaps if Numb had several formats it could have reached higher than 23? Saying that...i think Numb might have needed about 15 different formats!!!

You can only get a chart placement these days if you have three physical formats or less - I think that's why they introduced new rules: to stop fans being "ripped off" by having to buy multiple formats. Plus it was a way of levelling the playing field, as big artists with massive fan bases could release loads of formats and guarantee a high chart placing as loyal fans would buy all the different versions of the singles.

Rules were also introduced in the UK meaning that singles could be no longer in total running time than 40 minutes, then later 20 - which is why sometimes we find long dance remixes sometimes have a few minutes chipped off them to fit them on CDs with the other tracks! I remember The Orb taking advantage of the "40 minute" rule back in '92, by releasing the 'Blue Room' single: one track that was 39m 58s long!

Of course, these days downloads are also factored into chart placings - I'm not sure of the current specific rules for these and physical releases - I'm fairly sure it's still no more than three fomats.
