Definitely fairer to include Yes in the middle era. Clearly, the first era is always going to be the greatest but a top twenty from the other two would be as good as each other.boyjohn wrote: ↑Thu 04 Feb 2021, 11:57 pmYa, I guess I did arbitrarily skew it a bit by doing it by years instead of album qty. I did contemplate putting Bilingual into the 2nd group. Not sure it would change my view though. But just the fact that it is even a discussion gives the lie to those who claim that all their best work was decades ago.

Alternatively, a box set called Decades... one disc for each. They were prolific enough in the 80's to offset any late start to their recording career.

Difficult decade! I first listed the songs I thought were less than 10 years old, and had to remove more than 6 tracks.
Making this list also reminded me yet another time how amazing B-sides they make!!

I feel like this list should go back to 2010 as they released new songs in 2010 and then bracketed with the release of Hotspot in 2020.
Moreover, I think Together deserves some love as it frequently falls between the cracks as a compilation single, and being sandwiched between the extremely successful Yes and the twin releases of the lovely autumnal Elysium and especially the supernova of glory and rebirth that was Electric. It is a fine dance song with a great video. Had it been released before the BBC1 ageist blacklist I think it would have easily been Top 20, maybe Top 10.
In chronological order only:
Together (2010)
Leaving (2012)
Winner (2012)
Memory of the Future (2012)
Axis (2013)
Fluorescent (2013)
Love Is A Bourgeois Construct (2013)
Last to Die (2013)
Thursday (2013)
Vocal (2013)
Inside a Dream (2013)
Inner Sanctum (2016)
Burn (2016)
Say it To Me (2016)
The Pop Kids (2016)
Dictator Decides (2016)
Sad Robot World (2016)
Dreamland (2020)
Monkey Business (2020)
I Dont Wanna (2020)
and, if Together is not to be considered:
Burning the Heather (2020)

Together's amazing, as it says itself.

Yes it's very good. Took a while to sink in.

I heard Together for the first time in ages the other day and had forgotten what a great song it is. Really too bad it's a "bonus" track on a completely redundant "Best of PSB" album. It could have been so much more.
Mind you, haven't the Boys done well with "bonus tracks" on "Best of..." albums over the years - not the standard shovelware you'd expect from bands who are forced to add content to that type of release is it?!

Together is a great track. The only thing that is disappointing about it is that it is mixed and mastered way too loud and compressed. It needs to be remastered to allow some "breathing space' in the mix.

Re: Pet Shop Boys, Lately: Your Top 20 of the Last 10 Years
The video has simply elevated Together; I am not a fan of it unless I watch the video. The video is so joyful, so jubilious, so full of innocent budding love that I can't help myself but start to dance with happiness. Normally I am not a video person; PSB may never shoot any video ever and I would not mind but I must admit that both Together and Monkey Business are hugely helped by their videos.
Unfortunately, hundreds of buyers of Discography and PopArt will probably not have heard both songs. Maybe PopArt should be revised and expanded if issues like copyright etc. allow it, Together to Art side and Monkey Business to Pop side.
