Pet Shop Boys, Lately: Your Top 20 of the Last 10 Years

#1 Post by Drico One »

With the success of the new Russell T Davies drama, Its A Sin, there's likely to be a bit more interest in Pet Shop Boys from those who may not be that familiar with their nifty line in highbrow wit, romantic sincerity, and bizarre headgear - all set to a disco beat. Indeed, various charts have shown Discography et al appearing again like reanimated zombies returning for another feed of gooey esoteric brains. But when the thrill of the familiar wears off, some of these adventurous souls may go looking for more recent material as they realise that Neil and Chris have a touch of the undead about themselves too and are still very much alive and kicking. As such, what 20 tracks from the last decade would you recommend to the curious to drive home the point that class is permanent and hairlines are temporary?

My 2011-2021 hitlist would look something like this:

20. A face like that (2012)
19. Monkey business (2020)
18. Sad robot world (2016)
17. Hoping for a miracle (2020)
16. Fluorescent (2013)
15. Invisible (2012)
14. Inner sanctum (2016)
13. Axis (2013)
12. Dreamland (2019)
11. On social media (2018)
10. A certain "Je ne sais quoi" (2012)
09. An open mind (2019)
08. Thursday (2013)
07. Undertow (2016)
06. Brick England (2016)
05. Will-o-the-wisp (2020)
04. Love is a bourgeois construct (2013)
03. The Pop Kids (2016)
02. Leaving (2012)
01. Vocal (2013)

Happy people, I don't wanna, Burn, Inside a dream, and What are we going to do about the rich? narrowly miss out. What strikes me is how difficult it is to reduce the last decade to a top-quality 20. The order is not as definitive as it looks on paper and is fluid in reality. Regardless, that's a pretty magnificent list of songs for any artist in their fourth decade.

What's your list look like? Let's use this thread to discuss our song selections in more depth.

I could've sworn we had a similar topic to this by the end of 2019. Nevertheless, it's always quite challenging and fun to choose tracks for such lists as to see how details differ within the members of the forum.

Here are my choices:

20. Requiem in Denim and leopard skin (2012)
19. In his imagination (2012)
18. A face like that (2012)
17. Groovy (2016)
16. Memory of the future - new single mix (2012)
15. Happy people (2020)
14. Will-o-the-wisp (2020)
13. Inner Sanctum (2016)
12. You are the one (2020)
11. The forgotten child (2019)
10. Leaving (2012)
09. Bolshy (2013)
08. Thursday (2013)
07. Dreamland (2019)
06. On social media (2019)
05. Fluorescent (2013)
04. Say it to me (2016)
03. Decide (2019)
02. The Pop Kids (2016)
01. Vocal (2013)

Honorable mentions go to Only the dark, Undertow and Inside a dream.
A blues would be in B flat, pain defining wisdom,
but the soul is in the high hat, programmed in the system.

20 Give it a go - album mix
19 Monkey business - Christian Thomas mix
18 Sodom and Gomorrah show - ROH live mix
17 Inside a dream - album mix
16 Fade to Flurescent grey - Ryan Cannell mix
15 Sad Robot World - album mix
14 Inner sanctum - Carl Craig mix
13 I don't wanna - JCRZ Dancer mix
12 Dictator decides - JCRZ 2 in 1 mix
11 Brick England - Coversart piano mix
10 Love is a bourgeous construct - album mix
9 Leaving - Andrew Dawson Happy Sad mix
8 Inner sanctum vs Age of Love - JCRZ remix
7 Twenty Something - Coversart piano mix
6 The forgotten child - original mix
5 Decide - Blade remix
4 Brick England - original mix
3 Hoping for a miracle - Blade remix
2 Pop Kids - Offer Nissim extended remix
1 Vocal - Electric album mix

The above ranked based on the versions of the songs I prefer. I've said it before and I'll say it again. We've been so lucky to have JCRZ (aka velvetvoyage), Blade, Ryan Cannell, and of course Nathan Jay as unofficial remixers of the PSB over the last 25 years at least. Often taking the boys original tracks in more exciting directions. I rarely listen to original albums by the boys any more.. .just listen to playlists which invariably include other mixes as a preference. Certainly an upside of living in the digital age

I did mention zombies.

But given we've had an entire album era since - and some of the early decade stuff falls off with the passing of time - this is a good excuse to see how the Hotspot stuff measures up to its three predecessors.

Brains.

I only became Pet-obsessed last Spring and almost exclusively the first decade of activity up to Bilingual.

But I must say that since discovering it a few weeks back, The Pop Kids has almost had me in tears, and I've had it on a half hour loop more than once. That wistful kiss-off "I loved you", Christ, it kills me each time.

6. I don't wanna
7. Monkey business
8. Love is a Bourgeois Construct
