Lily Savage (Paul O'Grady) Pet Shop Boys rip-off single.

#1 Post by tonipsb »

Been watching some old Lily Savage stuff after reading one of Paul O'Grady's books and I came across this super obscure song he released as Lily in 1988 called 'Tough at the Top'

It sounds pretty much like a rip-off of Pet Shop Boys version of Always on my Mind. Then from about 2:20 it sounds exactly like the bridge in It's a Sin.

Has anyone ever heard of this. What do you make of it?

An Ian Levine production with a generic backing track. Lily flogged this to death at the Vauxhall Tavern back in the day. I have the 7" and 12".

Yes, the rip-offs are blatant - of both Always On My Mind and It's A Sin.

Reminds me a bit of the Pound Shop Boys.

Not really a good idea was it?
Not a born singer that one, scouse drawl over a synthetic drumbeat - not a good combination.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

Isn't it more of a pastiche or parody rather than a rip-off? They're deliberately creating something that sounds like gay 80s pop music.

Ok...this has become a guilty pleasure! I’ve had the 12” banging out in my car on repeat whilst running errands for people (it’s on Spotify!).

You can imagine a smoke filled club in S.London at 1am on a rainy Friday night...O’Grady strutting his stuff to throngs of people absolutely loving life!

“Don’t give up the day job” I hear. Well, it was his “day job” and he was obviously pretty good at it!
More strobes and BANGING, please!

Did you get to see Lily perform this? Was it taken seriously? Cool that you have physical copies as I couldn't find a whole lot of info about it online and I don't recall him even mentioning it in the Savage Years book.

It sounds quite generic, but I think the similarities to PSB are undeniable. I listened to the 12" and my partner overheard and said it sounded like One More Chance! I think O'Grady might be a Pet Shop Boys fan as he seemed genuinely complimentary of their work whenever they appeared on his show.

Yeah Lily performed this a few times. Once at Vauxhall tavern with a Chris Lowe keyboardist who just stood there so that was a montage to PSB itself. But then Lily went mainstream so the record was pushed aside. But speaking to Paul on several times he has said he is a fan.

Oh yeah, I remember this track.
When you say it, it really does sound similar to Always and It's a sin.
What a cool song, a banger IMO.
I'm okay with pastiche songs like this. It's a very natural phenomenon in music.

The only time I don't really like it is when an artist gets really popular purely from one or two songs that are clearly rip off of other popular songs and they can't do anything creative themselves.
