It Doesn't Often Appear At Christmas

#1 Post by tottenhammattspurs »

Not a moan, more an observation. Looking at the UK Top 40 this week and over 50% of it is Christmas songs. These will 99% be because of streaming. If you ask Alexa, Siri, Spotify etc to "play Xmas Songs" and overwhelmingly its always Mariah Carey's god-awful song that's streamed first, followed by the usual lowest-common-denominator standards.

The amount of decent Xmas songs that never get into the chart because they aren't paid try the record company o appear high up the streaming search engines!!

You'd think Parlophone would have pushed IDOSAC the last few years at least. I've not heard it at all anywhere...

It's either Mariah Carey's song or the one that says "I gaf you my heart".

They probably need to license it to one of the Now Christmas compilations that keep getting changed around the edges every year for people to take any notice. Personally I like the odd ones like Dominic The Donkey by Lou Monte and the wonderful Blue Christmas by Miles Davis, stuff the same old same old.

The charts show what a farce streaming has made of them as people mindlessly take whatever's offered/recommended to them on a plate by the service, same every December now. If you ain't bought it it shouldn't count, if it isn't physically re-released or downloadable kick it out of contention.
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing

Funny you should mention it as I just heard it yesterday in the local natural foods store here in Canada. I was surprised as I’ve never heard it anywhere in public before.

I was thinking about this recently. I wonder if they'd release IDOSAC in December 1997 as a stand-alone single, rather than a fanclub only release, if it would have charted reasonably and now be more of a fixture in Christmas playlists. They were still being played by Radio1 in those days and might have cracked the top-10.

PS - All I Want For Christmas is You is a fantastic Christmas song 🎅

Love Dylans version of that track.

I like IDOSAC, but I've never expected it to become a staple xmas track.

I put together a playlist of those PSB tracks released around this time of year that remind me of Christmases past, or have some other link to the season:

I think you might be right there. If it had come out as a proper single probably would have been in this weeks top 40. Even though it was a Christmas number 1, Always On My Mind never seems to get classed as a "Christmas" song.

As long as Fairytale of New York doesn’t hit the top spot, I’m happy.
