OMD - Pandora's Box (It's a Long, Long Way)

#1 Post by TallThinMan »

As I type this OMD's 1991 hit "Pandora's Box (It's a Long, Long Way)" is playing on the radio. Has anyone else noticed how similar the instrumentation of "Was It Worth It?" is to this song? They really remind me of each other. The OMD song came out first.

Ah, this was when OMD became OMB (One man band). The melody is completely different but the percussion and backing tracks are a sort-of hybrid of Was it worth it? and Go West.

If you want to hear PSB songs that are clearly influenced by other songs then listen to The end of the world (Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence), It must be obvious & Bet she's not your girlfriend (Depeche Mode - Halo) and One thing leads to another (Electronic - Feel Every Beat)

It’s a good song! Do OMD usually include it in their live set-list?

I agree. They played it when we saw them last November.

Greetings,

Other than being a good electronic pop song, I'm not seeing the similarity.

Retro. :)

Most notably the spoken middle bit is very similar to the spoken middle bit in Domino dancing. (I love Pandora's box, btw.)

When you look around yourself now
Do you recognize the girl
The one who broke a thousand hearts
Terrified the world

When you look around you wonder
Do you play to win
or are you just a bad loser?

Steve Anderson (one half of Brothers In Rhythm) did some of the mixes. Brothers In Rhythm produced/mixed Was It Worth It...and were some of the Creative Thieves who did the dub. They all did remixes for DMC Services at the time.

Never heard the song before, I like how it sounds.
The chorus does quite similar, both in tune and style. (And it's a long long way, From where you want to be) (Was it worth it, yes it's worth living for) Notice the timing of the words is the same and they have the chorusing effect.
And as above, the beat is fairly generic but is indeed similar.

I was going to mention this. Quite right. This is probably only the second time I've heard this song and I have to admit I find it really bland and boring.
