Hotspot DNA

#1 Post by rashomon »

My ruminations on where each track on Hotspot would best fit in with the 13 previous albums ...

1. Will-o-the-wisp - Please / Actually
2. You are the one - Release / Nightlife
3. Happy people - Bilingual / Yes
4. Dreamland - Yes / Super
5. Hoping for a miracle - Fundamental / Behaviour
6. I don’t wanna - Very / Yes
7. Monkey business - Bilingual
8. Only the dark - Behaviour / Elysium
9. Burning the heather - Release / Elysium
10. Wedding in Berlin - Super

Play along people ! ... max 2 albums per track
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

Will-o-the-wisp is a 100% Nightlife track.

Willo - Nightlife
You are the one - Nightlife / Bilingual
Happy People - Very
Dreamland - Yes / Super
Hoping for a miracle - Fundamental / Actually
I don't wanna - Yes
Monkey business - Nightlife
Only the dark - Bilingual / Very ... but it's very 80s, yet wouldn't belong on Please or Actually, so not sure.
Burning the heather - Release
Wedding in Berlin - Format

I get a Nightlife vibe from the album as a whole, but it's a much better, more consistent album.
Love comes quickly, but is a catastrophe and a bourgeois construct etc.

Happy people is more Very than Very itself.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

I said it in another post, but I pick up a "Behaviour" vibe from the album as a whole. It really transports me back to the early 90s. I don't necessarily think it's MUSICALLY like Behaviour but as a complete piece with its balance of styles and emotions, I'd say it's as close to that album as things get.

"Will-o-the-wisp": "Nightlife"
"You are the one": "Yes"
"Happy people": "Very" (but more like something from 1994-1995)
"Dreamland": "Yes" (a take on "The way it used to be" and "More than a dream" for me)
"Hoping for a miracle": "Elysium" (just wait for a next big orchestral concert like Mermaid/Salford/Cancer Trust)
"I don’t wanna": "Disco 3" (it reminds me a lots of b-sides and collabs from 2003-2004 years, especially "Jack and Jill Party")
"Monkey business": "Bilingual"
"Only the dark": "Fundamental"
"Burning the heather": "Elysium"
"Wedding in Berlin": something that may fits "The Most Incredible Thing"
"I think it’s an amazingly good album, I’ve got to be honest with you. It’s one of the albums I feel most proud of. But for people who don’t really know us, and have a sort of an idea about us, ‘Electric’ is more what the Pet Shop Boys are meant to be."
(Neil Tennant, speaking about "Elysium" on the eve of "Electric" release.)

Happy People: Introspective
Happy People Instrumental with Devices Vocals could fit pretty well, actually.
A blues would be in B flat, pain defining wisdom,
but the soul is in the high hat, programmed in the system.

It is far more hopeful than Behaviour; the promise of spring rather than the shades of autumn. It definitely reminds me most of Behaviour too, perhaps because of the equipment they used, although there are echoes of many of their other albums too. For example, Will-o'-the-wisp is straight off Please but the first two tracks together are reminiscent of Bilingual owing to their thematic unity in navigating the Berlin topography.

I really think this would mash up with It's alright as I really do sense the same DNA in the keyboard motifs
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing
