Pet Shop Boys to create music for My Beautiful Laundrette stage adaptation

#1 Post by Suburban_Boy »

The Pet Shop Boys – Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe – will compose music for the stage adaptation of My Beautiful Laundrette, which opens next month in Leicester.

Co-produced by Curve, Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham and Leeds Playhouse, the piece is adapted for the stage by Hanif Kureishi, based on his screenplay.

Tennant and Lowe said: "It's wonderful to be part of the team bringing My Beautiful Laundrette from the screen to the stage and we've enjoyed writing mainly instrumental music to be presented within a British Asian context."

Crikey didn't see this coming.

Now I can see why the new album is in January 2020. They have much going on with Billie Trix and this.

So between Super and the new album, they did some tracks for Agenda, the Billie Trix play and this? Wow. No wonder it took 4 years to make.

From their website:
Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant have written four pieces of incidental music and a couple of songs for a stage version of the 80s British film, "My Beautiful Laundrette", written by Hanif Kureishi. The production will premiere in Leicester at the end of September and then tour to other cities in the UK. The music will be released on Pet Shop Boys x2 label at some point. Full details of the play and its performances at the link below.

Well that came out of leftfield!

More exposure for the Boys before the new album release. Good stuff.

Keep the ball rolling!

Cool stuff, I like how active they are.
I'm glad the songs will see an eventual studio release.

Guys, this won’t be released as a Pet Shop Boys record. Hence all the references to Tennant/Lowe. This will be their next Tennant/Lowe release following Battleship Potemkin and TMIT. The artwork says ‘composers Tennant/Lowe’, the official production credits list Tennant/Lowe and the article is headed Tennant/Lowe. The only reference to PSB is explaining who Tennant/Lowe are!

I love all of these Tennant/Lowe side projects!!! The production is set in the 80s so I wonder if the music will be 80s styled???

    Exciting stuff.

To be honest I'm not particularly excited by these side projects. I'd trade them for a shorter wait in between studio albums any time. It's good though to see that they are active on different fronts.
