MCMLXXXIX - 30 Years

#1 Post by canveyboy » Thu 20 Jun 2019, 10:18 am

Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of my very first concert - Pet Shop Boys on tour MCMLXXXIX at Wembley Arena, London. June 19th 1989.

The absolute best day of my life at the time. I was 17 years old.

I wonder if we’ll ever get a proper release on DVD of this fantastic concert. If it’s not released this year for the 30th anniversary then I think it will never be released!

Here is one of the outtakes that I uploaded to YouTube several years ago (that has since been re-uploaded by others a few times) :-

I was at the glasgow show, same age.utterly compelling and mesmerising.still remember it as clear as day.the whole crowd were standing on their seats
when chris and neil entered the stage you could hear multiple screams and the total euphoria that erupted.magic.

Many people there?, I mean it was almost the imperial phase. You could feel you were watching a mainstream band and not many PSB fans can say thing. I mean, having taken part of concerts from that era.

The '89 live rendition of Paninaro is probably the best version of the song. Main riff sounds much more emotional than in the studio mix. But I can see why they didn't like much of the footage: it was a lavish production and on film it looks cheap.

I didn't even KNOW they were touring at the time so this totally passed me by until the Projections video was released. :wall:

I've made it to every tour since that was within my ability to go to (so Discovery was a no go for me for example but no hard feelings there).

30 years of beating myself up that I totally missed the boat on this yet 100% had the ability to go. :grumble:

I too was at the Birmingham show and it was nothing like any other concert I had attended, totally theatrical, totally absorbing. Years later I acquired a second generation VHS and it's a real disappointment, probably why it was never released - flat, slow cuts, static perspective, a complete disservice to the show and almost amateurish in realisation. It basically sucks the life out of a terrific show. Such a shame. If they still had the multiple angles from different cameras someone could put it together much better, but that takes money.
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing

Yes - we were there too! - and right at the back in the centre. I think I must have been around 13/14 at the time. My mum took me to see my first ever concert and mum still does now lol... That was a lovely concert. I cannot believe it is 30 years old. Many thanks to the fans that have posted this on Youtube. We were lucky as at the time a coach company organised it all with the travel.

Wow. I too was at Wembley and 17. It was incredible. I remember buying everything from the mercy stand, and even sitting down to listen to the Balenscue (?) quartet.

I was mid way back on the right hand side at Birmingham. I was 16 and I remember it like it was yesterday. Utterly, utterly magical. It was July though.
Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.
