David Tennant on nicking Neil's surname

#1 Post by daveid » Sun 10 Feb 2019, 3:42 pm

From the Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/201 ... -interview

Have you ever met Neil Tennant, whose surname you borrowed for your Equity card?
Never. I’ve always been a huge Pet Shop Boys fan, so I’d love to. Although I might also be embarrassed about how my 16-year-old self stole his name. Hopefully, he wouldn’t charge me some sort of back rent on it. You had to put a little list of options down on the Equity form and my first choice was actually David Brandon, after Kirk Brandon from Spear of Destiny, which would have been much better for alphabetical cast lists.

He talked about this to Jeremy Clarskson on Top Gear many years ago. I think it was some Scottish Actors Guild or whatever it was he was joining but they already had a David McDonald, he wanted to go on a different surname and looked up Smash Hits.
This is a song about boys and girls. You hear it playing all over the world.

He took it from Neil Tennant from Smash Hits rather than Neil Tennant from Pet Shop Boys! Not the most obvious name to take!!

So there was some destiny in all of this after all!

As an afterthought this doesn't quite add up.

David |Tennant was 16 in 1987 when (to the best of my knowledge) PSB was already going concern!
