PSB Song Similarities

#1 Post by Vince » Thu 09 Nov 2017, 1:04 pm

Opening this thread so we can post songs of anything similar to the Pet Shop Boys with the exact PSB song they seem to be close to.

Just heard this song after a long while.
Bee Gees - Flesh And Blood
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uZG3BBT490

Pet Shop Boys reference :
Intro strings is heavily reminiscent of West End Girls
(Bassline sounds like it is slowed down from another PSB song, but i'm not able to pin it.)
H.A.P.P.I.N.E.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.
S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.

Hello! I'm going slightly off topic (sorry! - I didn't want to make another thread about it). On the BBC news channel there is a holiday/travel programme that the opening and closing music to it sounds really funky. It reminds us of PSB's. 8) Anyone else know what I mean?

I've always associated "The night I fell in love" with "Heartbreaker" by Bee Gees & Dionne Warwick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElxKa05CAAA
"It was a dark and stormy night."
"You know what's wrong with your stories? They lack subtlety."
"It was a sort of dark and kind of stormy night."

I get along - Something For the Weekend by Super Furry Animals (single version, which sounds the most like it, was called "Something 4 the weekend"; not to be confused with the song of the same name by the Divine Comedy). And the lyric is reminiscent of "I Get Along Without You Very Well" by Hoagy Carmichael.

Or are we looking for songs that came after the PSB song they sound like?

And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'
"He couldn't have fell off that hard" Ain't no way

Madonna's Jump sounds like it samples West End girls but since she didn't credit them for it I do wonder if it was a recreation of the sound as a homage.

There's a West End Jump mash-up out there somewhere, which is great :-)

I feel that the Boys appropriated Surrender by Swing Out Sister for Dreaming of the Queen:
