The Dictator Decides, Lyrics, etc. (SPOILERS)

#1 Post by Drico One » Thu 24 Mar 2016, 2:11 am

Will someone please say the unsayable?
Will someone please tell me I'm wrong?
I live every day like a sad beast of prey
For I have to appear to be strong
And that's wrong
I'm too weak to be strong

Today I met with the generals
And the head of my secret police
Discussing conspiracies and prison facilities
For opponents I can never release
And there'll be no peace
Until they're released

Of course I'm in league with the army
It's not like I've got any choice
They officially adore me and my father before me
But gunpoint has a firm voice

The joke is I'm not even a demagogue
Have you heard me giving a speech?
My facts are invented
I sound quite demented
So deluded it beggars belief
It would be such a relief not to give another speech

Can someone please say the impossible?
Crowds should be out on the street
I've lost any will to threaten or kill
I'll be easy for you to defeat
And any resistance I meet
I'll beat a retreat

I'd rather that you didn't shoot me
But I'd quite understand if you did
Watch out for the army
The generals will go barmy
At the thought of a takeover bid

Oh please will somebody put me
Out of my misery?
This sad old dictator must sooner or later
Flee so that you can be free

If you get rid of me
We can all be free
The pale kid that hides in the attic behind his PC...

one question Drico, does neil flesh out the vocals more on this,or does he sing it totally all in the low register? cause I love when he sings a high vocal with the low such on dreaming of the queen, or vampires. in the dictator snippet I just hear him singing low.
I'm not going to read the lyrics here....I love the tune so much from what I hear I want lines to jump out at me like a surprise.

Excellent lyrics, I can't wait to hear it in full.
In a robot world, machinery is sighing, I thought I heard one crying

Oh God... genuinely the most brilliant lyrics I've read in quite a while.
Will I always need you?
Would you want me to?

Excellent! I love this kind of lyrics from Neil. What I've heard from the snippet it also seems to be a good track. I like his low vocals à la "Dreaming of the Queen", but I agree with the poster above that a touch of high vocals on top of it would be super!

Thank you Drico! From what I heard of the snippet, I love the feeling and the beat à la "I'm not scared" and Neil's low voice sounding like a deep confession. My anticipation for this song is strong! Reminds me the one of "The way it used to be" in the YES era.

What a masterpiece. Utterly imperial.

The most sinister, sinuous and sleek show tune they've ever done; sonically an epilogue to I'm Not Scared.

Brilliant.

Would this be the first PSB song ever (with lyrics) that doesn't contain its title in the lyrics?

Probably my favorite off the album so far. Gotta be about Kim Jong-un, maybe?

The Calm Before The Storm
Fugitive
The calm before the storm.
EDIT: Ha, you managed to add "The calm" before I hit the quote button ;).
"I think it’s an amazingly good album, I’ve got to be honest with you. It’s one of the albums I feel most proud of. But for people who don’t really know us, and have a sort of an idea about us, ‘Electric’ is more what the Pet Shop Boys are meant to be."
(Neil Tennant, speaking about "Elysium" on the eve of "Electric" release.)

It's perfection. I'm delighted we still get music of this calibre from them.
