Gig - November 1990 - The Mayan Club, Los Angeles, CA, USA

#1 Post by Tom Angel »

Does anyone know anything about this? It was described in Literally as ; but what set up was it? Performance? Sounds not, like far more stripped down. - another potential gig for a live box set of unique gigs .. they even played Paninaro and Occupy my mind!

The Pet Shop Bays have decided to play a concert here in Los Angeles 'for a laugh", and to create excitement about Behavior and next year's tour. It is the Pet Shop Boys' first full concert in the US. DJ Frankie Knuckles spins the brand new. David Morales mix of "So Hard", the minimal beat of which sounds fantastic in this cavernous temple. Suddenly. The Pet Shop Boys are on-stage: on The left, two female singers, two black dancers - Casper and Hugo from The 1989 tour - and on The right, back stage Dominic Clarke The computer programmer. Neil is stage center. Dressed in white Levies, a striped shirt, and a wasted. Almost hunting jacket. The Englishman abroad. On The right, Chris is wearing a coat spotted by Peter Andrea's and Steve Davison a trip to notorious Venice Beach- a huge baggy thing, with 'Fido Dido' designs all over it. With his super short haircut, it looks amazing. They launch into "Left To My Own Devices" and The very mixed audience erupts. The night is a big success.

I think this is the concert that's featured in some of the "Seriously.." video. So there's obviously footage of it.

There is also a fairly iffy audience audio recording of it floating around.

So, the only ever live outing for Occupy Your Mind, it's been utterly forgotten. And presumably Chris rapped and Neil played keyboards on Paninaro?

I went to this show. It was my first time at a club and bar, I used my brother's ID to get in. I won tickets to this show from a local TV music program called Total Request Live. The boys were on the show promoting Behavior and made a special announcement about the Mayan Theatre gig. Neil even made the suggestion to borrow a legal ID to their underage fans so they can get into the club. I have the program interview recorded on VHS tape and been meaning to digitize it and post to youtube but it's buried in storage at the moment.
The show was pretty awesome, from the perspective of a 16 year old Pethead. I hadn't heard Dusty's version of Occupy Your Mind, so when the boys performed that song, I was dumbfounded and wondered why I hadn't heard it before. All I remember is trippy music playing while a smokey tunnel was being created by lasers (lights) and smoke and the dancers emerging from the tunnel. It was a small stage and the staging was very basic, with the lasers/lights, smoke. I believe they also had the video screens in the background that they used for the Arsenio Hall show's performance.

It would be awesome if the boys release the footage from this show.

Who did the vocal on Occupy your mind? I assume it's Sylvia, I know Neil says something at the end but could never quite catch it on the dodgy recording.

Having another vocalist completely preform a song while Neil takes a break is one the coolest things they’ve done in concert.
I sincerely *love* Disco 2 and listen to it straight through regularly.

i would have to disagree... only because i really wanted to hear My October Symphony performed by Neil on the Performance Tour, and not Derek Green.
