Re: Hurts- the new PSB?
I've only heard the stuff on youtube, but it's like Drico said in a recent thread, there are the Pet Shop Boys, and then there are those that are trying too hard. PSB is effortless. Even when they are not effortless, there is a lot of content. Hurts, while it's good sounding pop no doubt, is a cheap imitiation. The closet I've heard to actual PSB is Inner City Pressure, which, strangely, is purposely a parody. But in the pastiche they aren't trying too hard to ape any one aspect of the song (West End girls of course), what they get correct is the overall feel. Hurts is cold calculation at every turn. It's well put together, but it's like whateverman says about almost anyone he dislikes, he doesn't like the intention of the artist. And I guess it does matter sometimes.
And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'
"He couldn't have fell off that hard" Ain't no way
"What happened to the way you was rappin' when you was scandalous
That Canibus turned into a television evangelist"
Plus he raps with his regular voice [BOOSH! BOOSH!]
[BOOSH! BOOSH!] (What was that?) Pet Shop Boys

Hurts was on BBC Radio 6 yesterday, and whilst praising (somewhat) the music of the PSB (which they attributed solely to Chris), they said they didn't like Neil's vocals. They also claimed they barely new of the PSBs music at all until recently, if you can believe that.

HOT THREAD COMING THRU
Re: Hurts- the new PSB?
I've listened to some of their songs that are out. They are pretty good, but I don't think there is much PSB about them. Maybe the synths in "Better than love" though.
Re: Hurts- the new PSB?
So far I like the songs I've listined to and will likely buy the album. The video with the hot girls in the pool is ace, loved it. Being an electronic duo it should not be a big surprise they are compared to PSBs. If they are half as good as the boys, Hurts will be a good addition to my music library. I hope they do well. Hard to find good music these days and this band would do well to take few bits of the PSBs style and make it their own.

It's funny, because Hurts's lead singer has a really common voice, nothing strong, nothing to recall. I think it's their weakest point. But of course everyone has a right to express own opinion.
BTW - I like them, ''Wonderful Life'' i truly wonderful, the rest is OK and i'm looking forwards debut album. Gonna be sweet.

I've been around the world for a number of reasons. I've seen it all the change of seasons, and I, my lord, may I say nothing?

I find them really insipid; like a synthpop version of Matt Bianco. Nice.
This is far better than their current single:

Re: Hurts- the new PSB?
I've loved their three singles so far....and in true PSB style, they seem to be more popular in mainland Europe right now than in their native UK. I fear, along with another up and coming band i love called "georgia wonder" www.gwonder.com/destroy/ unless it's generic RnB autotune, a UK top 40 will never happen
is is and isnt isnt

That version of Wonderful Life sounds weird... the version off the album is much better.

Re: Hurts- the new PSB?
I find them to be just a very generic synth duo that seem to be too ernest in trying to break out and be original and end up just a wee bit irritating. In that way they are the Lady Gaga of synth pop.
I think they sound more like a-ha than PSB, with Kraftwerk haircuts.
Perhaps I should like them, but they leave me cold.

Yeah, Hurts aren't remotely influenced by Pet Shop Boys...
