However, Ive listened to it thrice today and it all begins to make sense.

It began to make sense to me when "Fundamental" is came out.
"I think it’s an amazingly good album, I’ve got to be honest with you. It’s one of the albums I feel most proud of. But for people who don’t really know us, and have a sort of an idea about us, ‘Electric’ is more what the Pet Shop Boys are meant to be."
(Neil Tennant, speaking about "Elysium" on the eve of "Electric" release.)

Love makes you weaker.
But what's a man life without love?
Better an ended love than no love at all (IMHO).
I hope you'll get better, I am sincere.

"The Only One" from Nightlife, summed up perfectly the end of a seven year relationship many years ago. Even though she wasn't cheating, she hid many things from me.

The Only One is one of the worst PSB track ever.
It reminds me "Wish I Could Fly" by Swedish band Rokset.
That's why I don't like it.
PSB should sound as PSB, it's not very good when they sound as euro pop band who, by the way copy UK sound.
You know what I mean...

It does sound like the title of a Morrissey song!

If I were to compile a CD of the Pet Shop Boys worst songs, Love Is A Catastrophe and The Only One would definitely be on there.

Retro. :)

It's the lyrics that make this track. They capture the despair at the end of a relationship so perfectly.

I split up with who I thought then was the love of my life in early 2003 and I remember this song suddenly made complete sense to me. I still often think of her when I hear this song, but not in a good way :)
I'm always waiting...

They are called Roxette, actually. (Sorry, I couldn't resist...) I agree that"Wish I could fly" is not one of their greatest songs, even though that's not what you mean! :)

However I don't understand why so many PSB fans dislike "The only one". I think it's a beautiful song! "Love is a catastrophe" was for me, initially, the worst song on Release, but since time has passed I now prefer it to at least - you guess it - "The night I fell in love"...
